Fenerbahce rallies in fourth quarter to edge Olympiacos

Fenerbahce Istanbul turned it up all the way defensively, and used a 15-0 run to come back from an 11-point fourth quarter deficit and edge the visiting Olympiacos Piraeus at Fenerbahce Ulker Sport Arena on Thursday. The win improved fourth-place Fenerbahce’s record to 15-8, while Olympiacos dropped to the third place with a 16-7 record, but the Reds also won the season tiebreaker against Fenerbahce due to their 9-point win earlier in the season. Bogdan Bogdanovic scored a career-high 27 points along with 4 assists and 3 rebounds to lead the winners. Luigi Datome netted 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, while Ekpe Udoh had 6 points, 6 rebounds and 5 blocks. Erick Green scored 11 of his 17 points in the first quarter for Olympiacos. Kostas Papanikolaou added 13 points plus 8 rebounds, while Georgios Printezis finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds in defeat.

Olympiacos was firing on all cylinders to start the game with Printezis starting things with a three-pointer, before Green scored 11 points to give the visitors a 10-16 lead. The Reds scored on each of their first eight trips down the floor, but Fenerbahce collected 5 offensive rebounds and Dixon and Datome each hit a pair of triples as the hosts were quick to tie the score at 18-18. Bogdanovic's three-point play that opened the second stanza gave Fenerbahce its first lead of the night, 25-22, as things changed and the hosts now allowed only one field goal in a span of almost five minutes to open a 34-28 advantage. With Bogdanovic scoring 10 points in the second quarter, Fenerbahce kept the lead and control, going into halftime in front 40-34. In the third quarter, Olympiacos took control behind its defense that allowed only two field goals in 10 minutes. Papanikolaou hit back-to-back threes to tie the game at 42-42, and Mantzaris hit from downtown to spark a 2-14 run, capped by a third three from Papanikolaou that made it 46-56 late in the third. Nikola Milutinov’s put-back dunk extended the margin to 47-58 at the start of the fourth, but Fenerbahce stepped it up with aggressive defense that held Olympiacos scoreless for seven minutes. Back-to-back three-pointers from Bogdanovic and Datome gave Fenerbahce a 64-60 edge and Bogdanovic drove by Lojeski to make it 67-62 with 1:13 to go. Printezis cut the difference to 3 points with 21 seconds left, but the hosts ran out the clock to celebrate a big win.

"They started 0-7, we had lazy defense and made bad decision offensively. But in the second quarter we played really good defense, and because of that defense we took an advantage of 6 points into halftime. The third quarter, and it is not first the time, we started very lazy, without moving the ball on offense, including assisting directly to them for an easy fastbreak layup. They also scored some baskets in the last seconds of possessions, which happens in basketball, so we tried to talk to players, tell them it is not over, we have to continue to play and continue to fight and don’t need to change a lot of things in our game. We played the last quarter absolutely differently, with absolutely different wish and approach, and that is why we won. We got this energy from ourselves, but very importantly, from our fans. I am very happy with this feeling that I have with how much the fans trust us. And I want to thank them for one more great night in Fenerbahce Ulker Sports Arena. Another important thing, we had 9 more shots than Olympiacos in this game. And 7 free throws more. One of the keys to the game was to win rebounds. In the first half they had only 1 offensive rebound, at the end of the game 6 offensive rebounds. Steals and turnovers were also in our favor, and because of that we took more shots. Now, if you have shots you must score, but we shot very bad. We had 6 more shots, but they made 2 more two-point shots than us. And we made the same number of three-pointers, although we shot 3 more attempts. But a team that pretends to be a good team must find a way to win a game in any way. Because this is the game of basketball. Some days you score everything; sometimes you have problems, like today. One of the things I think Olympiacos is good team is because they know how to play. So it is a very important victory for us, and I will be happy in the future if my team continues to control the game like tonight, having more possessions than the opponent, but hoping we shoot the ball better."

"I think it was a real derby, a high-level EuroLeague game between two very good teams. But we have a bad taste in our mouth because we produced something better to win the game. In the first half we allowed 8 offensive rebounds, and that gave Fenerbahce a lot of easy shots and points. Although we started the first quarter very good offensively, and the way we played, the score was not good for us at the end of the first quarter. In the second, Fener put pressure on us, and scored some points, but in general, we had some mistakes on offense, and their lead was 6 points at halftime, and we were still in the game. I think we had a very good third quarter; we played defense that we know to play. And until the 32nd minute we controlled the second half well. But, under big pressure from Fenerbahce, we made a lot of mistakes and turnovers. We lost our concentration, we made 6 turnovers in the last eight minutes, and I think from our bad offense Fenerbahce scored easy points. At the end we tried to come back with a small lineup, we got within 3 points, and the plan was to foul Ekpe Udoh, because all their other players are good free throw shooters. Fenerbahce shot 81% free throws. So we tried to trap the guards, to force the ball to Udoh. But this did not happen, and unfortunately we lost the game."
