Valencia stays perfect with 78-62 home win

Valencia Basket stayed perfect in the Eurocup this season by starting Last 32 Group I with a handy 78-62 home win against PAOK Thessaloniki on Wednesday. PAOK was never able to lead in the game, but rode Valencia's heels to stay within 31-34 shortly after halftime. After that, the hosts pulled away steadily and were never in danger again. Bojan Dubljevic led the winners with 21 points and Luke Sikma had 11 to go with 10 rebounds for a double-double. Seven other Valencia players scored between 6 and 8 points. Uros Duvnjak led PAOK with 14 points while Will Hatcher added 11 and Vangelis Margaritis 10.

Valencia went inside to Dubljevic and Sikma to establish a 6-0 lead before Margaritis got PAOK on the board. Vladimir Lucic and Dubljevic stepped out for three-pointers that upped the difference before Antoine Diot soon joined them and then assisted Sikma for the first double-digit lead, 19-8. PAOK answered with a 0-10 run led by Hatcher and Sofoklis Schortsanitis, but Valencia was able to save a 21-18 edge after 10 minutes. Triples by Rafa Martinez and Guillem Vives early in the second quarter sent Valencia up 29-21, but neither team scored for 3 minutes after that and then PAOK put together a 3-8 run before Dubljevic finished with a basket near the buzzer to make it 34-29 at the half.

Margaritis cut the difference to 34-31 with the second half's first basket, but Valencia had an 8-0 response to make it 42-31. Soon, Dubljevic and Fernando San Emeterio were burying triples and with the latter's 3 more points the hard way, the hosts led 51-35. Duvnjak's back-to-back triples helped PAOK until baskets from Schortsanitis and Milenko Tepic could cut the difference to 58-47 after 30 minutes. A pair of buckets by Justin Hamilton led to another three-pointer by Diot to make it 67-50 for Valencia early in the final quarter. The hosts were content to trade points for the rest of the game as their defense ensured no surprises on the way to another victory.

"We dominated the game despite we the fact that we didn't feelt comfortable with their defense. If you don't score from outside, you lose confidence and then you can't play. They were good with that in the first half. Also we had to adjust to Sofo, because we couldn't defend him one-on-one. We are not that used to defend these kinds of players. Despite not playing our best basketball, we deserved the win."

"We knew coming in to the game that it was going to be very, very tough, but we got in the game believing in ourselves, believing that we could win the game. Valencia is a very strong team, they've got a really deep roster, with great players and they like to play an uptempo game. Playing in the Spanish league, one of the best leagues in Europe, they have a lot of experience. They play good in the transition game and shoot a lot of threes. At the end of the day I think we matched up with them well for a good 27 minutes, but that's where they broke the game open. As I said, they've got a very deep roster and we got tired down the stretch. They continued to make threes and play that uptempo game and I think that wore us down and in 40 minutes they ended up taking the game."
