Olympiacos had started the journey to a title with a pre-season blessing in Istanbul from Bartholomew, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch, and ended it by showing him the Euroleague trophy that they won.
Then it was time for the fans to welcome home their heroes, thousands of them at the Athens airport and again in Pireaus, a sea of red for the occasion, with the most unexpected champions in recent Euroleague history carrying their trophy.
The newspapers headlines in Greece screamed the triumph of Olympiacos.
All media highlighted the fact that Olympiacos had staged one of the most amazing comebacks in basketball history.
The newspapers cited as heroes MVP Vassilis Spanoulis, title-winning shot-maker Georgios Printezis, top scorer in the final Kostas Papanikolaou and Acie Law, who played hurt.
Many Olympiacos players mentioned how they were happy to bring a little joy to a country experiencing hard times. And that joy was felt in the streets of Piraeus.
