Olympiacos Piraeus is the 2011-12 Euroleague champion!

In a game for the ages, Olympiacos Piraeus came from 19 down in the third quarter to stun CSKA Moscow 61-62 and become the 2012 Turkish Airlines Euroleague champion. Georgios Printezis’s floater with 0.7 seconds left won it for the Reds, who become European champions for the second time in competition history. Olympiacos also won in 1997, also under head coach Dusko Ivkovic. A brilliant game at both ends by Kostas Papanikolaou led the new champs with 18 points. Vassilis Spanoulis added 15 points and Printezis had 12. CSKA led 53-34 in the third quarter and seemed well on its way to victory, but a 14-point run brought the Reds back and they stayed close until the end. The turning point came when former MVP Ramunas Siskauskas missed twice from the line with 9.7 seconds left and his team up 1. Olympiacos came down at the other end, got the ball to Printezis and the rest is history. Milos Teodosic paced CSKA with 15 points, Andrei Kirilenko posted 12 points and 10 rebounds and Nenad Krstic added 11 in defeat.

Pero Antic banked in a shot for Olympiacos and Ramunas Siskauskas hit a jumper for CSKA to start the game, but it was the defenses of both teams that dominated first part of the game. Olympiacos forced 4 early turnovers in the first five minutes and used a Spanoulis triple to go up 2-5. On the other side, CSKA controlled their defensive boards and had Teodosic end a five-minute scoring drought with a tough long jumper. After a pair of free throws by Kirilenko, CSKA moved into its first lead 6-5. Papanikolaou responded with a drive through heavy traffic and Nenad Krstic scored from the free throw line for another lead change and a 9-7 CSKA advantage. Great intensity on defense resulted in couple of steals on both ends of the floor in the final minutes of the first quarter. Alexey Shved made a free throw to finish the quarter with CSKA holding 10-7 lead.

Defenses had their say in the second quarter as well. CSKA’s athletic front line controlled every inch underneath its own basket, but Olympiacos equaled that aggressiveness by not leaving any room for an open shot. But with a tip-in by Kirilenko and a dunk by Sasha Kaun, the Russian champs took a 14-7 lead. Olympiacos was held scoreless for more than six minutes before Papanikolaou made a couple of free throws. Krstic and Spanoulis then exchanged buckets to make it 16-11 game with six minutes left in the first half. After a timeout, it was all about Teodosic who hit back-to-back-to-back three-pointers in a span of 67 seconds to put his team up 25-13. Olympiacos tried to come back – Spanoulis drove twice to the basket, first getting to the free throw line and the second time scoring a layup – and Papanikolaou hit a three, but Darjus Lavrinovic, Kirilenko and Siskauskas all scored from the paint to keep the margin in double figures. Going into the final minute of the half, Lavrinovic hit a jumper too, to extend the lead to 14 point and after Shved’s three was ruled to be after the halftime buzzer, that ended up being the advantage CSKA had at the break, 34-20.

Krstic and Antic exchanged buckets from close range to start the third quarter. Krstic scored once again, followed by Papanikolaou and Teodosic exchanging three-pointers and CSKA going up 41-25. But the Reds’ offense got it going too, with Antic getting to the free throw line and Spanoulis hitting a wide-open three. Viktor Khryapa continued the sudden scoring spree with a triple of his own, and Kirilenko added another one with Papanikolaou’s hand in his face to get CSKA back to a 16-point margin. Points from the charity stripe and some aggressive defense helped Olympiacos stay in the game, but Siskauskas, Jamont Gordon and Shved made sure CSKA kept the big lead and made it even bigger, 53-34, with two minutes to go in the quarter. Olympiacos had only three players scoring points in the game before Kostas Sloukas hit 1 of 2 free throws and Georgios Printezis scored a fast break layup. Evangelos Mantzaris added a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the quarter to make it a 0-6 run and pull Olympiacos to 53-40 going into the last 10 minutes.

Sloukas scored a three to open the fourth quarter and Printezis made a layup to cut the deficit to 8 points. Marko Keselj was the next to score his first basket of the final, his three brought Reds to 53-48. They had two more possessions to come even closer but Sloukas missed a tough three and then threw a wild pass. CSKA was held scoreless for almost 6 minutes and allowed 0-13 run before Siskauskas scored close range. Kirilenko was a creator of another key play when he blocked Kyle Hines’ attempt for a layup, but Printezis showed hustle to score 4 points and get Olympiacos to 55-52 with four minutes to go. CSKA’s woes continued with Krstic missing both free throws. Kirilenko banked in a shot just to see Papanikolaou hit a three and make it a 4-point game going into the final three minutes. Kirilenko and Papanikolaou both made only 1 of 2 from the line and Printezis made a layup making it 60-58 with 1 minute to go. After Teodosic missed a three-pointer, the ball went again to Printezis, but his attempt to tie the game from three meters was blocked by Andrey Vorontsevitsch. Teodosic got to the line with 19.6 seconds and made only 1. CSKA then fouled Papanikolaou with 10.1 seconds remaining. The Olympiacos forward nailed both to bring his team within 1 with 10.1 seconds to go. Only 0.4 seconds passed before the Reds put Siskauskas on the line. But to everyone’s amazement, the former MVP missed twice. Olympiacos did not hesitate. The ball got to Printezis, whose one-handed floater with 0.7 seconds left will go down in history. CSKA had one last chance for a miracle, but the ball was tipped away and an Olympiacos party started.

“First, I want to congratulate our opponents. For sure it’s not easy for me to talk after a game like this. Of course I wish it would have been a different result. At the end of the second quarter, we began to lose control of the game. Maybe we thought it was over. We were not disciplined and were talking to the referees. And all of a sudden we lost the game. For sure, CSKA always wants to win all team titles. I don’t know if we were good enough to do it. But if we don’t win one title, I can’t say we were bad. At the beginning, [Teodosic] was excellent. He was the biggest difference in the beginning. In the end he has to control the team. Like I said before, [Olympiacos] is young and very dangerous. When Spanoulis went to the bench, they didn’t have anything to lose. They made big decision and many big shots. Our biggest problem was that of the last 6 free throws, we made only 2.”
IVKOVIC, DUSAN

“This final was an unexpected moment. I want to give congratulations and big thanks to my players who competed until the last second so that we can do it. It was difficult to prepare the game. I didn’t expect final game pressure. But it definitely was there. The first quarter we scored 7 points with 7 turnovers. Turnovers killed us. We knew that it was going to be very difficult for us to score 80 points to stay with CSKA. We cut Barcelona to 64 points, so the goal was to cut CSKA from an 85-point average to 70-75 points. The offense was very confused. When we started to play faster with the younger players, it was better. I told them to continue this. I remember when it was a 19-point game, I said: ‘Let’s go guys, you can beat them. It’s our game.’ We got it down to 13 points after three quarters. I didn’t expect an experienced player like Siskauskas to miss free throws. CSKA was very big in the loss. Everyone congratulated us. I would like to thank the fans and the Euroleague. "

“The fourth quarter is difficult to explain. I was ready at one point to call a timeout after 2 free throws. Spanoulis is a very big target of defenses. But Spanoulis was great, he was very unselfish. I have to praise Acie Law, who played this game on his own responsibility. We are very lucky that Spanoulis was the leader of the team. But all of my players were very hungry.”

KIRILENKO, ANDREI
CSKA Moscow
"This is a very disappointing loss. I want to congratulate Olympiacos, they played a great game and coming back from 19 points down takes a lot of heart and a lot of guts. I think they did a very good job in the fourth quarter and punished us. I want to say sorry to our fans, who gave us great support. We are as disappointed as they are. We have a great team and it is hard to get it in the first year when the team has just been built. Last season, the team did not make it to the Top 16 and we went to the final this season. Of course, we wanted to get the title, but to be honest, Olympiacos outplayed us. They were the better team in the fourth quarter. They started making three-pointers in the third quarter and we didn't respond. We couldn't make our offense go; it was stuck at that point. It is very hard to explain what happened. We stopped playing and did not survive until the final whistle. At that point we were down by 1."
GORDON, JAMONT
CSKA Moscow
"I'm feeling really disappointed now. Not really sure what exactly happened. The game was in our hands, but they started making shots and caught on a big momentum. We really wanted to win this trophy. Now it's too early for me to talk about the game. We were unable to finish the job we started. It's disappointing."
PRINTEZIS, GEORGIOS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"This is a great success and a very big moment for us, for the club and for the fans. We are very happy to make them happy after so many years. The last basket did not win the game, we won it during the game. We were focused, we never gave up. And we won.
SLOUKAS, KOSTAS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"It is unbelievable. Unbelievable! I could not have even imagined this situation. We fought really hard, we were down, but we played smart and with a lot of concentration. And we won with that last shot in the last second."
HINES, KYLE
Olympiacos Piraeus
"It was just great, we showed a lot of character and fought all the way to the end. When we were in the worst situation, that is when we showed our best character to win the game. This is an amazing feeling. Oh my God! It's amazing! Nobody touhgt we would win. Nobody! We were the only ones to believe and I am very happy for my teammates; we are a great group of guys."
LAW, ACIE
Olympiacos Piraeus
"We showed a lot of courage and character, this was a team effort. We fought back and returned to the game just by character and determination. We never gave up, gave our best in the fourth quarter and our fans helped us to win the title. It is an amazing, amazing feeling, the best moment in my career. We will see how we celebrate tonight, but it is going to be unbelievable!"
GECEVICIUS, MARTYNAS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"We fought back in the third and fourth quarters. We made two big three-pointers to come back in the fourth. We deserved to win this; we worked hard the whole season. And we were rewarded because we fight, we work, we believe. And we are the Euroleague champions."
PAPANIKOLAOU, KOSTAS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"There are no words to express what I am feeling right now. I have no words to describe what a great team is here. This is a family and we fought all together. We have taken Olympiacos to the next level. This is what it is in my mind right now. I will never, ever forget this moment. It is the greatest moment in my life, and we have the best fans in the world!"
DORSEY, JOEY
Olympiacos Piraeus
"We never stopped fighting. We couldn’t get into our rhythm tonight. They took us out of the paint. But the young guys stepped up. We said we needed to make jump shots and we made a lot of jump shots tonight."
MANTZARIS, VANGELIS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"I can't believe it. We are the Euroleague champions, I can't believe it! This is the best moment in my life! We got back to the game and Georgios won it for us in the end. It was a dream for us to win the game and this shows that dreams come true and this is real!"
SPANOULIS, VASSILIS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"This is just something unbelievable. Unbelievable! We are the Euroleague champions! We are very happy to able to live this moment and never gave up during the season. We fought, came back and won the game. Yes, it's my second Final Four and I got the MVP twice but the most important thing is that we won the title."
PAPADOPOULOS, LAZAROS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"I don’t know what to say. This was a great game. we got back in the third quarter and hit some big threes to get back into the game. We believed in ourselves and now we are the champions."
