Bamberg holds off Olimpija in Ljubljana

Brose Baskets Bamberg had a good start in Last 32 Group K by edging Union Olimpija Ljubljana 65-71 in the Slovenian capital on Wednesday. Ryan Thompson paced the winners with 15 points. Elias Harris and Brad Wanamaker each added 13, Janis Strelnieks had 12 while Trevor Mbakwe got 10 and 12 rebounds for Bamberg. Halil Kanacevic led Olimpija with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Gregor Horvat added 11 points and 9 rebounds while Alen Omic had 10 points and 8 boards for the hosts. Bamberg led all the way, opening the game with a 2-13 run to get a 15-26 margin after 10 minutes. The guests kept a 28-39 lead at halftime and boosted it to 35-58 after 30 minutes. Olimpija rallied in the fourth quarter but Bamberg never lost control and managed to cruise to a very important road win.

Wanamaker got Bamberg going with free throws which Omic erased with a layup. It didn't last long, as Thompson and Josh Duncan combined for all points in a 0-11 run which gave the guests the lead for good, 2-13. Kanacevic hit foul shots but Wanamaker and Thompson soon made it a 13-point game, 4-17. Kanacevic got help from Gregor Hrovat and Blaz Mahkovic but Olimpija only managed to trade baskets and a jumper by Mbakwe fixed the score at 15-26 after 10 minutes. A three-pointer by Hrovat and a layup by Omic gave the guests hope, 34-32, midway through the second quarter. Wanamaker stepped up with 4-of-4 free throws and a three-pointer by Karsten Tadda boosted Bamberg's margin to 26-39. Free throws by Paolo Marinelli fixed the halftime score at 28-39. Bamberg improved its defense after the break and found its regular go-to guy in Wanamaker, who got help from Harris to make it a 16-point game, 30-46. Jaka Brodnik hit a jumper but Strelnieks and Harris allowed Bamberg to stay way ahead, 35-52. Harris, Daniel Theis and Strelnieks made Bamberg break the game open, 35-58, at the end of the third quarter. A layup by Harris capped a 0-10 run and gave the guests their biggest margin, 35-60. Kanacevic, Marko Marinovic and Klemen Prepelic fueled a 16-1 run which brought Olimpija back to life, 51-61, making Bamberg call timeout. Strelnieks and Thompson hit consecutive jumpers but a dunk by Omic brought Olimpija within single digits, 57-66, with 2 minutes left. Bamberg did not panic, as Harris and Strelnieks kept the guests out of trouble down the stretch.

"I told my players in the lockerroom after the game, that if we played like we played in the fourth quarter, we would probably win this game. We had an agreement before the game that we would play like this throughout whole game. I was searching for players with energy throughout whole game. We made too many mistakes and we rebounded very badly. When Brose Baskets was up by a lot of points, we started to play our basketball and soon good things started to happen."
TRINCHIERI, ANDREA
Brose Baskets Bamberg
We had a chance to grow up as a team and be smarter. We lost this chance. We played aggressive, solid and smart, but not great. We had a great game on Sunday and I know we can't play every game like this. In the fourth quarter, we allowed 30 points and this was not good for us. We won an important game, but I am not satisfied, we should have been smarter and mentally stable."
