EA7 Milan edges Maccabi in dramatic finish

In a high-scoring showdown that came down to the final second, EA7 Emporio Armani Milan opened its Turkish Airlines EuroLeague by edging Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv 99-97 at home on Thursday. Milan led 93-83 with less than two minutes remaining, but an outstanding Andrew Goudelock brought Maccabi back in the game and free throws by Devin Smith got the guests within 98-97 with 8 seconds left. After Hickman split free throws, Guy Pnini sent a length-of-the-court pass to Sylven Landesberg, whose layup attempt was blocked by Jamel McLean at the buzzer. Milan’s tally tied its second-most in a EuroLeague game, which it has now achieved three times – two of which came versus Maccabi. Milan’s record for points in a EuroLeague game is 101 in a road win at PGE Turow Zgorzelec in December 2014. Hickman led the winners with 22 points. Milan Macvan added 18 points, Miroslav Raduljica 15, Alessandro Gentile 12 and Zoran Dragic contributed 11 for Milan. Goudelock led Maccabi with 27 points. Smith added 18, Landesberg 15 and Maik Zirbes scored 13 before fouling out for the visitors. Milan will play its first road game against Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul on Thursday, when Maccabi hosts Real Madrid at Menora Mivtachim Arena.

Three-pointers by Krunoslav Simon and Macvan gave Milan a 20-14 lead, but Goudelock kept pushing Maccabi. Raduljica followed a three-point play with a slam for a 25-24 Milan lead after 10 minutes. Gentile and Raduljica took over early in the second quarter, but Landesberg and an unstoppable Goudelock gave the guests a 29-31 edge. Milan found a new go-to guy in Dragic, who helped his team tie the game, 38-38. Goudelock returned to the floor and followed a big basket with an assist to Joe Alexander for a high-flying slam. A layup by Macvan fixed the halftime score at 44-44. Dragic struck twice from downtown after the break and got help from Hickman and Macvan in a 15-1 run that put Milan in charge, 59-48. Maccabi was not done, however, as Landesberg led a 0-9 run. Gentile and Simon stepped up for Milan to extend the lead to 72-65 through three quarters. Raduljica remained strong and restored a double-digit Milan lead, 81-71 with six minutes left. Goudelock buried back-to-back triples in the closing minutes and free throws by Smith made it a one-point game, 98-97, with 8 seconds left. After Hickman split free throws, McLean rose for a big block on Landesberg at the buzzer.

"It was a very interesting game and in the end we tried to make it even more interesting. If you learn from this mistake, that's good because we won anyway. Winning was important tonight. Everybody did a lot and the 29 assists meant a lot to us. And so all the players that scored in double figures. At the same time we need to improve defensively, especially on pick-and-roll situations. We need to do better because we know how to do better. They made some crazy shots, they have talent, Andrew Goudleock was fantastic, but we need to improve."

"[Hickman ] played with a lot of personality and he gave us a sense of security; offensively he gave direction, he defended well also… I chose to start with Macvan and Pascolo because I feel our defense can be more aggressive early in the game when we are not in the penalty. Especially now that Raduljica is not healthy enough. We also missed Sanders a lot because he's perfect to match up with their power forwards. We still found a way to cover the position well and I was very worried about that before the game."

EDELSHTEIN, EREZ

"I think it was a very fun game for fans, 99-97 and a lot of ups and downs here and there, with a lot of comebacks. I cannot be happy even when we scored 90 points on the road. I said 90, not 97, because we hit some crazy shots in the end, but we didn't win the game. If you score more than 85 points on the road, you should win the game. I hope that we will improve our defense in the future, it is the main goal that we have right now."

"When I got hurt, it is funny that Milan played against Maccabi in the playoffs, so I didn't have a chance to play. It feels good to finally play against my former teammates and even better to come out victorious. We played really well on offense, but defense is the problem. We definitely have to get better at that if we want to be serious this year. We definitely have to look at the film and make some adjustments. Me, personally, I like to compete on defense. Whatever it takes, if I have to guard their best player or try to slow something down, I am going to give it my all, being there to help my team."
PNINI, GUY
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"It was a tough game against a strong opponent with a very enthusiastic home crowd. Something is still not clicking right in our defense, both on a personal and team level. We have to step it up because there's no way we don't win a game in which we score 97 points. We have to learn from our mistakes."
GOUDELOCK, ANDREW
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"We fought with everything we had to come back, but it wasn’t enough. We shot well, but made mistakes on defense; our switches weren’t good and we got confused. That is for sure our biggest problem right now. I am proud of my teammates. We showed character, we battled and came back from a lost situation, but we shouldn’t have gotten into that situation. We can’t give up 99 points in a game. I feel like I have an important role to lead the team, but I want to lead us to victories. If I score 50 points and we lose, it’s not worth it. I believe the wins will come."
