Kuric leads Gran Canaria in easy opening win

Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas opened its new 7DAYS EuroCup campaign in style, crusing past Cedevita Zagreb 101-76 in Group A clash on Wednesday. Gran Canaria took control from the start and never looked back, as the hosts broke the 20-point barrier before halftime. Kyle Kuric paced the winners with 25 points on 5 of 9 three-point shooting. Pablo Aguilar scored 13, and Darko Planinc had 12 points in comfortable victory. Depleted Cedevita, which was without Ra’shad Wright, Karlo Zganec and Marko Arapovic, had Scotty Hopson lead the way with 23 points. Miro Bilan had 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Mirza Begic scored 12 in defeat.

Cedevita had a strong start and consecutive baskets by Bilan gave his team a 4-6 lead. A three-pointer by Kuric sparked a 9-0 run which Eulis Baez finished with a basket that made Cedevita call timeout at 17-8. Three-pointers by Luka Babic and Toni Katic brought the guests a bit closer, 22-16, after 10 minutes. Bo McCalebb and Sasu Salin stepped up for Gran Canaria in the second quarter, giving the hosts a double-digit lead, 33-18. Gran Canaria found a new go-to guy in Aguilar and a red hot Kuric hit three shots from downtown in the final 64 seconds of the first half to make it a 20-point game, 54-34, at halftime. Hopson tried to change things after the break but Cedevita only managed to trade baskets now. Albert Oliver and Baez took over to boost Gran Canaria's lead to 70-45. Gran Canaria kept a 77-61 lead after 30 minutes and another triple by an unstoppable Kuric sealed the outcome long before the final buzzer.

"We played a great defense during most of the game. We had a good rhythm in our offense because of this and we gained confidence to continue playing good. They scored too many points between the second and third quarter, where Begic caused us a lot of damage. We lost our rhythm and we had difficulties. In the last quarter we defended well again, pressing the lines."

"It ended up as a tough loss for us. We lost the game in the first half, when we had a few turnovers that can't be explained. We let them play in transition, and look for their shooters. We left some of them open, and they punished us. It was hard to play after we were down by 20 at halftime, and had 14 or 15 turnovers. We tried to come back, but Gran Canaria is too experienced and it controlled the game until the end."
