Singleton, Tomic lead Barcelona to first win

FC Barcelona Lassa grabbed its first win of the 2018-19 Turkish Airlines Airlines EuroLeague season by downing FC Bayern Munich 83-73 at Palau Blaugrana on Thursday. Both teams now have a 1-2 record in the regular season standings. Ante Tomic led the winners with 18 points, Chris Singleton added 15, Kevin Pangos had 12, Jaka Blazic 11 and Pierre Oriola contributed 10 for Barcelona. Maodo Lo led Bayern with 16 points, Vladimir Lucic netted 12 and Danilo Barthel had 11 for the guests.

Barthel opened the score with a three-pointer, but Pangos had 6 points in a 10-0 run that put Barcelona ahead for good, 10-3. Pangos kept pacing Barcelona, getting help from Victor Claver and Tomic to make it a double-digit game, 19-8. A huge dunk by Kevin Seraphin boosted the lead to 24-8, which Lo and Leon Radosevic cut to 26-17 after 10 minutes. Lo stayed on fire early in the second quarter and a power layup by Devin Booker gave Bayern hope at 34-28. Barcelona improved its offense through an unstoppable Tomic and a layup by Oriola restored a 43-32 advantage. Lucic kept Bayern within 44-36 at halftime. Lucic stayed on fire after the break, getting Bayern even closer, 51-47. Singleton and Blazic rescued Barcelona and a turnaround jumper by Tomic boosted the hosts' margin to 65-54 after 30 minutes. Derrick Williams and Dedovic got Bayern as close as 76-69 with over three minutes left. Kyle Kuric hit a three-pointer that sealed the outcome, as Bayern never recovered.

Pivotal performer

Singleton did a little bit of everything to make sure his team got its first win - 15 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, a block and 3 fouls drawn for a performance index rating of 22. Most important, his all-around game had a collective reward.

Game-changing moment

With Bayern trailing 55-50, Barcelona looked for answers. Blazic and Singleton provided them and free throws by Oriola gave his team a double-digit lead, 65-54, at the end of the third quarter. Bayern never really recovered, as Barcelona took full control for good.

Stellar stat

Barcelona outrebounded Bayern 37-20, allowing its opponents to pull down only 2 offensive boards. Barcelona had 14 offensive rebounds - seven times as many as Bayern!

Lo had a career-best index rating of 20. He tied his best scoring night in the competition - Lo had previously scored 16 points against Olympiacos Piraeus, while playing for Brose Bamberg, on March 9, 2018.

"The game was how we expected. You don't need to know basketball or the teams in the EuroLeague, especially Bayern Munich. I have the advantage that I know all the players in their team and their coaches, their president and vice-president, and especially their general manager. But sometimes this doesn't help. I am, of course, very happy about how we won the game. Winning in the EuroLeague - or in any official game - is always no easy job, but to play against one team like this, that plays team basketball, is very difficult for everyone. They don't have big stars, but as a team, they are excellent. They fight and this is what is very difficult for every team. We didn't lose our concentration and were calm when they got close again, with three-point shots and dunks. We were lucky that we had a player coming off the bench, Jaka Blazic, who changed the rhythm of the game with 4 offensive rebounds. Blazic is our player, this is is his quality and it is nothing new to me; this is the reason he is in the team. We had 14 offensive rebounds and over 60% two-point shots made, this is the reason, along with controlling the rhythm of the game, why we deserved this victory."
RADONJIC, DEJAN
FC Bayern Munich
"First of all, congratulations to Barcelona for the win. They played quite well in the beginning of the game and we had lots of problem during that time. They had the advantage in the beginning and then we started to play better, with problems with their offensive rebounds in the first half. They continued to play the same way; we had 2 offensive rebounds in the whole game and Barcelona got 14, getting a lot of points after that. We tried to make it a close game, but missed 2 free throws at 76-69 and after that, everything was clear."

Players

RIBAS, PAU
FC Barcelona Lassa
"We did the basic things we needed at a very high level. Offensive and defensive rebounds, playing all 40 minutes with good defense, which allowed us to control the rhythm of the game. In other games in which we didn't hit shots, it was hard to do this, but we managed to do it today and dominate the game. We took a step forward tonight - without hitting many outside shots, we dominated the game and that is a good sign for the next EuroLeague games."
TOMIC, ANTE
FC Barcelona Lassa
"It is not the first win in our lives, but it is nice - it is our first win in the EuroLeague [this season]. It is very important for us because we didn't start very well this year. I think we played well the whole game and controlled the boards, which is the most important thing for us, and that's it. It is an important win."
LUCIC, VLADIMIR
FC Bayern Munich
"If you want to win against a team like Barcelona – especially away – you have to play concentrated over 40 minutes. We didn’t do that."
LO, MAODO
FC Bayern Munich
"We didn’t rebound, we didn’t box out today. In the third quarter we were down by 4. Then they got offensive rebounds. That killed us."
