Andrew Goudelock - Unics Kazan vs. Maccabi Haifa Bazan (photo Maccabi Haifa)Unics Kazan confirmed its status as one of the teams to beat in the 2013-14 Eurocup season by downing Maccabi Haifa Bazan 67-75 in Israel on Wednesday. Unics grabbed a valuable road win to get difficult Group G started behind 20 points from Andrew Goudelock. Six other Unics players scored at least 5 points for the winners. Ike Ofoegbu led Haifa with 15 points. Moran Roth added 12, Brian Randle had 11 while Donta Smith got 10 for the hosts. Goudelock had 15 first-quarter points to give Unics a 13-22 lead after 10 minutes. Chuck Eidson and Ian Vougioukas soon allowed Unics to boost its margin to 18-37, keeping a 29-46 edge at halftime. Haifa rallied in the third quarter, as Randle and Smith brought the hosts within 49-55 after 30 minutes. Haifa managed to make it a two-point game, 65-67, with 2 minutes left but Nikos Zisis and Kostas Kaimakoglou stepped up in crunch time to lead Unics to a good-as-gold road win.

David Cubillan and Ido Kozikaro shined early to give Haifa a 5-0 lead. Unics quickly found a go-to guy in Goudelock, who had 7 quick points to give his team a 9-11 edge. Goudelock followed a jumper with consecutive three-pointers to boost Unics's lead to 10-19. Eidson and Cubillan also struck from downtown to fix the score at 13-22 after 10 minutes. Luke Harangody joined the three-point shootout and a dunk by Eidson broke the game open, 15-29. Haifa called timeout but Unics kept rolling, as Eidson got some help from Evgeny Koleshnikov and Vougioukas to make it a 19-point game, 18-37. Ofoegbu and Roth tried to change things for Haifa but Tywain McKee and Harangody kept Unics way ahead, 29-46, at halftime. Haifa improved its defense after the break, making Unics go scoreless for more than 3 minutes. Even with that, an outstanding Harangody restored a 37-52 Unics lead. Haifa found a go-to guy in Smith, who got plenty of help from Randle and Ofoegbu to bring the hosts as close as 49-55 after 30 minutes. Goudelock, who had been scoreless since the first quarter, stepped up for the guests and a three-pointer by Zisis restored a double-digit Unics lead, 52-62. Haifa called timeout and even when Goudelock struck again from downtown, Kokia, Randle and Smith brought the hosts back to life, 65-67, with over 2 minutes remaining. Zisis took over with a critical jumper and a three-pointer by Kaimakoglou sealed the outcome down the stretch.

Maccabi Haifa Bazan
"We talked at halftime that we didn’t arrive to the game in the ideal situation, but no one will feel sorry for us, especially Unics. We needed time to make the adjustments and we paid the price at the start of the game, but the players deserve a big credit for competing until the last second. In the second half we gave Unics a nice run and knew to stay in the game we needed to play as a team until the end. We had two weeks to prepare before the start of the league and did not know which team we would face. I am happy that the fans appreciated the performance of the players in the second half. We are still disappointed that we lost and playing a team like Unics we must make with no mistakes"
TRINCHIERI, ANDREA
UNICS Kazan
"We knew that we needed to perform a stable game to play well here. We knew that Haifa will make some good runs and have good players like Roth and Smith. We had an excellent first half with good defense, but a slow start in the third quarter because Haifa played better defense. We led most of the time by 8 to 10 points, had a couple of mistakes at the end, but won the game and are still making progress."

"Although we are disappointed with this loss, I take a lot of good things from this game, coming back within a two-point difference in a tight game until the end. If we made another good play we could have won it, there are a lot of good things to take from the game. In the first half we had a bad offensive game and they opened a gap, but in the second half we played good defense and we stole some balls to come back. We are disappointed we lost."
