Unicaja opens EuroCup campaign by routing Buducnost

In its first-ever 7DAYS EuroCup game, Unicaja Malaga went on the road to rout Buducnost VOLI Podgorica 62-86 at Moraca Arena in the Montenegrin capital on Wednesday night. Unicaja stands at 1-0 in Group C, while Buducnost dropped to 0-2 and sits in last place after Round 2. Unicaja took control in the first half with Dejan Musli dominating inside. Oliver Lafayette held Unicaja's playmaking reigns, while Daniel Diez hit 3 and Adam Waczynski a pair of triples without a miss. Unicaja used a 2-15 run that bridged the first and second quarters on the way to building a 27-47 margin with more than three and a half minutes to go in the first half. The visitors led 34-55 at the break and cruised in the second half to a huge win. Jamar Smith paced the winners with 19 points on 3-for-3 three-point shooting. Musli scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half, and Diez scored 11 of his 12 before halftime and also hit 3 triples without a miss. Waczynski and Hamady Ndiaye scored 10 points apiece in victory. Marcus Williams scored 13 for Buducnost, with Boris Savovic adding 12 and Petar Popovic 11 in defeat.

A triple from J.R. Reynolds helped the hosts grab early lead, but Musli and Smith combined to score 15 points to put Unicaja in front. Buducnost came within 17-18, but Lafayette hit a triple, then Diez followed with two of his own, including one from the left corner to make it 19-31 after 10 minutes. Waczynski hit a couple of shots from long range in the second quarter, and together with Musli he helped the margin increase before racing for a fastbreak basket that opened a 29-51 advantage. The visitors held a 34-55 lead at the break and Buducnost closed the gap a bit with a triple by Popovic in the early going of the third stanza. However, Unicaja replied with 9 unanswered points capped by a triple from Smith to make it 41-66 at the midway point of the third quarter. The margin reached 26 points, 48-74 by the end of the third quarter, and it broke the 30-point barrier with four minutes to go, 54-84 as the winner had long been decided.

Head Coaches

SCEPANOVIC, VLADO
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"A deserved victory for Unicaja. This is the real situation; there is currently a big difference in quality on the court, especially because three of our players didn't play. These games allow us to be realistic, let's see what we can do in this moment against a very strong team. It is a good lesson for future games. In the second half I was pleased with the attitude of the players."
PLAZA, JOAN
Unicaja Malaga
"We know Buducnost played a great game against Murcia, and we were ready for a tough task here. I am happy with how we started this game, very seriously, very competitive. We won three quarters, lost the last and I know we have to improve some things in our game, because we expect very tough matches in the future."

Players

NIKOLIC, ZORAN
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"We lost a very important game in front of our fans; we had a bad reaction in the start of the game. Especially our defense was not at the desired level. We have to forget this game as soon as possible and focus on the ABA league game with Mornar on Saturday."
MUSLI, DEJAN
Unicaja Malaga
"It was a good game for us. An excellent start of the game, we scored a lot of open shots, ran well, played good defense. Perhaps this result is not so realistic as Buducnost has a really good team."
