Zenit holds off Ludwigsburg to move into first place in Group L

Zenit St Petersburg held on for a tough 83-80 victory over MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg to take over sole possession of first place in Group L. Jason Boone gave the visitors a slim lead early in the second quarter and a Royce O’Neale triple made it 28-30. Dowdell put the hosts back in front by 2 at the midway point in the quarter. Timmas reeled off 5 straight points, but Shakur kept Ludwigsburg close. Koshcheev and Artem Vikhrov pushed the Zenit advantage to 7 before Johnson ended the half at 46-41.

Cotton provided a spark for Ludwigsburg and Shakur followed up in a 0-8 run to get the visitors back in the game. Dowdell made it 59-55 through three quarters. Dowdell and Koshcheev combined to extend the lead to 7 early in the fourth quarter. Shawn Huff chipped away at the Ludwigsburg deficit with a three-pointer, but still the hosts remained in control. Anton Pushkov free throws made it 74-66 with five minutes to go. But Shakur scored twice and then bettered Timma free throws with a three-pointer to make it 76-73. Head Coaches

KARASEV, VASILY
Zenit St Petersburg
"That was an important victory. After a tough away game and two losses in the VTB League and weak-willed game in Kazan, we needed to come back and we succeed. They have 11 American players and play an American style of basketball. They are aggressive in defense. All of their players were on the court. First we need our players to be fresh. Today we had energy and returned to our basketball."
PATRICK, JOHN
MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg
"It was a very intensive game against the top team in St. Petersburg. I have a lot of respect to their coach and the way they play. We missed free throws and open shots. We made some mental mistakes. Each team gave 100% and took 17 offensive rebounds. Because of the intensity of the game, both teams got tired legs and that’s why we missed long shots."

Players

KARPUKHIN, ALEKSANDR
Zenit St Petersburg
"Their press didn’t surprise us. We watched their games and know how they play. We had an advantage from the very beginning. We played confident and controlled the game."
SHAKUR, MUSTAFA
MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg
"Today we missed many three-point shots. That kind of shot is not an easy one. We are a team that is capable of shooting better, so I think we will see better days."
