Khimik Yuzhne rallied from a double-digit halftime deficit to PAOK Thessaloniki 70-58 and advance to the Last 32 on Tuesday. Khimik improves to 6-3 in the sole possession of the second place in Group F, while PAOK drops to 5-4. Khimik trailed 23-33 at halftime, and game was tied late in the fourth quarter 51-51 before the hosts pulled away. Paul Delaney scored 10 points in the key run, and finished with 16 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Romeo Travis, Jamal Shuler and Matt Gatens each scored 15 in victory. Michalis Tsairelis scored 17 points for the visitors, and D.J. Cooper had 12 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists in defeat.
Travis fueled a 10-0 run for the hosts to start the game. He hit a triple and a jumper, before his two steals led to fastbreak points from Gatens. A three-pointer from Shuler made it 13-2, but PAOK immediately got it going with Evangelos Margaritis scoring from long range and close range, and a fastbreak layup from Mark Payne helped the visitors be within 15-11 after 10 minutes. Gatens nailed a triple to start the second quarter, but Tsairelis scored twice inside, sparking a 3-22 run by the visitors. Tsairelis added a triple and a layup to his tally, before Georgios Dedas contributed with 7 points, including a triple and a dunk, as PAOK took 21-33 lead. Travis hit a buzzer-beater to make it 23-33 at halftime, and opened the third quarter with a jumper. A triple from Shuler and one from Sergiy Popov helped tie the game at 35-35, before Popov’s steal and Shuler’s layup put the hosts back in front. Tsairelis snapped an 8-0 run with couple of baskets for 38-39, but Travis finished the quarter with 6 consecutive points, and Gattens hit a three to open the fourth quarter for 51-44. The visitors responded with a pair of quick layups and a triple from Cooper for 51-51. However, PAOK never regained the lead as Paul Delaney scored 10 points, including a basket-plus-free throw followed by a three-pointer, helping the hosts take 68-56, sealing the deal and sending them to the Last 32 in club’s debut season.
