Kramer sets steals record as EWE Baskets records key road win at PAOK

EWE Baskets Oldenburg collected a statement victory by stopping PAOK Thessaloniki 68-81 on the road on Tuesday in Group I. Oldenburg improved to 2-1 in the group and hosts two of its final three games. PAOK dropped to 1-2 and visits Oldenburg next week. Chris Kramer starred with 8 steals to set a new Last 32 record, which had been 6 and was shared by three players, including Vangelis Margaritis of PAOK. The competition record for steals in a game is 11 by two players. Kramer added 12 points and 5 assists in a splendid all-around effort. Brian Qvale scored 15 for Oldenburg, Vaughn Duggins tallied 11 points and 7 assists and Rickey Paulding scored 10. Will Hatcher paced PAOK with 17 points, Nikola Markovic collected 11 points and 13 rebounds and Margaritis also scored 11 in defeat. The visitors used runs of 2-12 and 0-11 in the second quarter to take a commanding 28-43 halftime lead and coasted he rest of the way.

Paulding got things rolling for Oldenburg with a three-pointer before Margaritis struck for PAOK, first with free throws and then a jumper. Kramer made it 4-8 with a three, but the back-and-forth trend remained when Margaritis’s next bucket put the hosts on top. Robin Smeulders scored twice to make it 10-14 before Kostas Vasileiadis connected from downtown. Uros Duvnjak drew PAOK within 15-16 after 10 minutes. Vasileiadis put PAOK up at the start of the second quarter. But Oldenburg responded with a 2-12 run in which Qvale scored 5 points and Philipp Schwethelm drilled a triple as the visitors stormed ahead 19-28 midway through the quarter. Hatcher came alive and rallied the hosts to 26-30, but Oldenburg finished the half on a 0-11 run led by Kramer for a commanding 28-43 halftime lead.

Paulding scored 5 points early in the second half and Kramer took a steal in for a layup and a 30-52 Oldenburg advantage. Markovic sparked the hosts and a Georgios Dedas triple drew the hosts within 42-57, but Klemen Prepelic and Qvale had Oldenburg in cruise control by the end of the third quarter at 45-65. Scott Machado traded a pair of threes with two more from Hatcher at the start of the fourth. The visiting attack remained on course and refused to let PAOK chip away at the deficit until the closing minutes, when Vasileiadis delivered an assist and sank 4 free throws in an 8-0 run to end the game at 68-81.

"Oldenburg is a very good team. We played without Sofo, but the worst thing of all was that we weren’t prepared to play without him. We made hasty attacks and since we were trailing, we had even bigger problems. "Our plan was to not allow PAOK’s key player, Vasileiadis, as well as Hatcher, get into the game, that is to not allow them create and execute with ease. We wanted to inhibit the ball movement and make them take the ball at all odd spots, thus forcing them into hasty shots. We also had a great three-point percentage in the first half. In the second half our shooting was not as good, but our defense went on the same and we got an important victory that we believe opens a small door to qualification to the next round."

We allowed them to make easy baskets and built a difference and we never came back in the game. "We made a very good start in our game, especially through our defense, and started building a difference that only grew till half time. In the second half we knew they were coming to try for a comeback, so we continued with strong defense and succeeded in keeping the lead to the end. We were ready to play defense on Sofo, so when he did not get on the floor we had to only continue with the rest of our game plan. But Schortsanitis being out was definitely of help for us."
