Guduric’s career-high 21 points lead Crvena Zvezda over Barcelona

Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade defeated a short-handed FC Barcelona Lassa 76-65 on Wednesday night at the site of the 2018 Turkish airlines EuroLeague Final Four, Kombank Arena in the Serbian capital. Marko Guduric shined with a career-high 21 points with just 3 missed shots plus 5 assists and 2 steals to lead Zvezda, which improved to 2-1. The result dropped Barcelona to 1-2. Marko Simonovic added 13 points and Milko Bjelica 12 for the hosts, who dished 28 assists. Brad Oleson led Barcelona with 15 points, Victor Claver tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds and Pau Ribas looked good with 9 early points, but was stretchered off in the second quarter with a leg injury and did not return.

The defenses reigned early as each team only scored once in the first three minutes. Oleson heated up with 10 first-quarter points, including a buzzer-beating triple for a 9-16 Barcelona lead after 10 minutes. After Zvezda rallied back to within 1, Barcelona regained its composure and a Ribas triple made it 17-23 midway through the second quarter. However the hosts rallied again behind Guduric’s 8 points and took their first lead at 33-31 on a Simonovic three-pointer. A Guduric three and a basket-plus-foul capped a 16-0 run that put the hosts in control, 40-31 at the break. Ognjen Kuzmic powered through Ante Tomic for a basket six minutes into the second half that gave Zvezda its first double-digit lead, 49-38. Charles Jenkins’s three-pointer gave the hosts a 60-48 advantage entering the final stanza. Barcelona continued to battle and Marcus Eriksson connected on his first EuroLeague three-pointer, but Guduric and Zvezda continued to roll as the hosts notched an important victory.

"It is a big one for us. We played good defense from the start, but felt we needed for things to develop to start functioning better on offense, too. Barcelona made some shots and built a lead, but the second quarter was really excellent offensively and defensively. We needed to score a few easy points, and that got us going in the second quarter, and we built a margin. In the second half, we fixed the problems we had in the first half, their offensive rebounding and open three-point shots. We played good defense, and kept the lead. After big wins they expect big words, but we have to keep working. We have a game against Panathinaikos, which is another challenge. But I understand we raised the bar after what we did last season and early this season. I don’t think anyone expected this kind of start of the season from us."
BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
FC Barcelona Lassa
"I have to congratulate [Crvena Zvezda] on this performance. How we played, we didn’t deserve to win… Now we have to overcome one more injury. Pau Ribas will probably be out several months. It’s not easy especially with all these games in a row. "

"It’ a big, big game for us, big win for the city, the crowd for everybody in Serbia. After a bad first quarter, we picked up our defense and were able to score some easy baskets and at the end we won. That’s the most important thing. "
