Nizhny uses late run to win in Ljubljana

Vladimir Ivlev scored 6 points in a 0-8 fourth-quarter run as Nizhny Novgorod pulled away to beat Union Olimpija Ljubljana 73-79. The visitors started the game on a 2-14 tear and led by as many as 15 in the first half. Olimpija rallied back in the third quarter, but never took the lead. However Sava Lesic scored 7 straight points in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 68-68. Nizhny did not panic and Ivlev took charge to put the visitors back on the path to victory. The result bumped Nizhny to 1-2 in Group M and kept Olimpija winless. Semen Antonov paced Nizhny with 15 points and Evgeny Baburin scored 14, while Rasid Mahalbasic controlled the paint with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Ivlev finished with 12 points and Victor Russ scored 11. Miha Lapornik led the hosts with 15 points, Lesic and Dawan Robinson scored 14 each and Sasa Zagorac added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Nizhny took charge from the start as Baburin scored on the opening possession and Antonov added a triple. After Zach Wright scored Olimpija’s first basket, Nizhny raced to a 2-14 lead behind 5 more points from Antonov. Threes by Robinson and Lapornik brought the hosts within 8-17, but the difference grew to 14 through Mahalbasic and Ivlev. Robinson scored twice in a 7-0 spurt that narrowed the gap to 16-23, but Antonov’s third three ended the first quarter at 17-28. Ivan Strebkov and Dimitriy Khvostov added threes early in the second quarter to push the lead to 19-34. Lesic scored twice for Olimpija, but another Khvostov triple made it 26-39. Zagorac connected from downtown to close the gap, but Mahalbasic responded with 4 straight points. Strebkov split free throws to make it 35-48 at halftime.

Baskets by Wright and Robinson drew Olimpija within 9 at the start of the second half. Thena triple by Zagorac cut the deficit to 44-51. Back-to-back Blaz Mesicek triples had the hosts back in the game at 54-55. Mahalbasic and Ivlev reacted quickly to rebuild a 6-point Nizhny edge. Lapornik and Mahalbasic traded baskets to bring the third quarter to a close at 56-62. When Baburin extended the Nizhny lead back to 8, it may have seemed the momentum had returned to the visitors, but Lesic took charge with 7 straight points to tie the game at 68-68 with five minutes to go. However Ivlev scored 6 points in a 0-8 Nizhny response that all but iced the game. Zagorac made it a 6-point game with a minute and a half to go, however the hosts ran out of time and Nizhny claimed the win.

Union Olimpija Ljubljana
"We could have won the game. We should have won the game. We had all the chances for victory, but we ruined everything by playing stupid and making too many mistakes. Especially in the first half; we played very bad defense, then we changed a few things and it looked better. In the second half, we played solid defense when we caught the opponent, but then we made few mistakes in offense. The mistakes were made by our players, who already have experience and such mistakes shouldn't happen to them. At the end we ruined our chances for the victory by ourselves."
BAGATSKIS, AINARS
Nizhny Novgorod
"It was a tight game, tough game for both teams. I cannot say we are a better team than Union Olimpija. Both teams have problems playing on the same level for whole game. I could say it is normal, but it is not. We both played five, seven minutes of great basketball, and then continued playing like kids. We kept the patience for all 40 minutes. We played good in some moments. At the end we found good situations and we responded."
