Bogdanovic leads Fenerbahce past Barcelona in overtime

Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 12 points in the last three minutes of regulation and in overtime to lead Fenerbahce Istanbul to a 68-65 overtime victory against FC Barcelona Lassa on Thursday at Fenerbahce Ulker Sports Arena. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Fenerbahce, which improved to 18-12, finished the regular season in fifth place and will face Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens in the playoffs. Barcelona finished its season with a 12-18 record. Barcelona led by 5 with four minutes to go, but Bogdanovic tied the game with a three-pointer and against on a layup that scored via goaltending with 5.5 second left in regulation. He tied the score twice more in overtime before scoring the go-ahead basket with a step-back jumper with a minute remaining in the extra session. Bogdanovic finished with 15 points and 4 steals. Nikola Kalinic added 13 points, Kostas Sloukas netted 10 and dished 5 assists Ekpe Udoh posted 9 points, 15 rebounds and 4 steals. Tyrese Rice paced Barcelona with 19 points and Victor Claver tallied 15 points and 7 rebounds. Ante Tomic collected 7 rebounds to mover past former Panathinaikos great Mike Batiste and into a tie for seventh place with current Panathinaikos forward Antonis Fotsis on the career rebounding charts with 1,121. Juan Carlos Navarro started for Barcelona and scored the 4,000th point of his EuroLeague career in the third quarter.

Claver owned the opening minutes with a pair of three-pointers. Three minutes passed before Sloukas marked his return with a jumper for the hosts’ first points. Barcelona fell into a shooting slump and Sloukas free throws put Fenerbahce ahead 7-6. Jan Vesely bested Claver’s steal and layup with a three-point play. Rice’s free throws represented Barcelona’s first points not from Claver and he soon blew past James Nunnally for a basket-plus-foul and an 11-15 lead after 10 minutes. Kalinic scored twice in the first few minutes of the second quarter to put the hosts up 17-15, but Aleksandar Vezenkov countered with a three-pointer. The duo of Kalinic and Sloukas soon had the hosts on top again, but Rice started a 9-0 run with a three-pointer and ended with a layup to make it 24-29. However Udoh made a nuisance of himself on the offensive glass and then assisted to Vesely on an alley-oop slam as Fenerbahce claimed a 30-31 halftime lead.

Luigi Datome shined with 5 points in a 10-0 run early in the second half as Fenerbahce surged ahead 40-33. Navarro scored his 4,000th point with a fade-away jumper and Claver nailed his third triple to close the gap. Rice’s three with a little more than a minute left in the third quarter put the visitors up 42-44. And the third quarter ended 44-46. Back-to-back threes by Melih Mahmutoglu and Kalinic put Fenerbahce back in the driver’s seat. Barcelona did not go away and regained the lead, 50-51, through Tomic. Rice and Stratos Perperoglou pushed the margin to 51-56, but Udoh came up with a slam and a dunk before Bogdanovic’s triple tied the game at 56-56. Tomic sank a floater with 43 seconds left to give the visitors the lead, but Bogdanovic tied it at 58-58 via goaltending with 5.5 seconds remaining and that’s how regulation time ended. Petteri Koponen and Bogdanovic traded threes to start the bonus period. The teams continued to trade blows until Bogdanovic nailed a step-back jumper for a 65-63 lead with a minute left on the clock. Barcelona stayed close and had a shot to tie it in the closing seconds, but Koponen missed from downtown.

"We had to play the last game in the EuroLeague regular season in a situation where not everything depended on our result. But I told the players, our picture today of how we played in practice and how we played today is completely different. And I specifically talk here about offense. We had lot of turnovers, at the end of the game 17. We dominated rebounds, but our percentage of shots was very, very bad. We found the way to win because of really playing hard and with big desire, and that is something good. But it is obvious that for the first game of the playoff we must change, especially how we play on offense. Looking at another stat, our index rating advantage is 88-59, and we won the game by just 3 points. I cannot believe I see that. We know we play the first two games on the road, we must get ready, and I just hope we will finally have everybody healthy. One more time, thanks to our fans for the great support. They gave us the push needed to win the game."
BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
FC Barcelona Lassa
"First of all it was a very decent game, very tight, decided in overtime. Of course we didn’t have any real interest in the game, but for us it is very important for us to play well in every game. I think we played well at both ends, especially when he had patience. We shared the ball without turning the ball over, because this was our problem from the beginning of the season. When everyone was patient, we executed many passes and we found open and clear situations. Our defense in the end on Bogdanovic wasn’t good enough because he scored 7 points in overtime. I am happy for the players because we came here and showed very good heart against a very good team. "

"We are not playing our best basketball right now, but a win is a win. Now we have to get ready for [the playoffs]. We can’t score 68 against CSKA and expect to win. We gotta get ready. We gotta get healthy. We’re going to have to give everything we got. We have to play together and try and have fun. "
RICE, TYRESE
FC Barcelona Lassa
"It was a good game on both sides. Both teams competed all the way up until the last possession really. We came out and we fought. This was a bigger game for them than it was for us, but at the same time you want to win every game when you step out on the floor. We had a chance to tie it up in the end and send it to another overtime and that’s really all you can ask for. "
NAVARRO, JUAN CARLOS
FC Barcelona Lassa
"It is a little bit bittersweet. We had chances to win the game and I would have liked to have reached 4,000 points in a win. I would have also liked to do this at home, but in the end, it didn't happen. It is a very important number and I proud to be the first one to reach it. Aside from that, it has been a difficult season, with a lot of problems, and we didn't make it to the playoffs, so I cannot be happy. Vassilis Spanoulis plays a lot of games and sees a lot of minutes. He is also younger than me, so he will keep playing the EuroLeague when I leave. Still, we will see what happens, but I will try to score more next season."
