Limoges CSP takes second straight win over Valencia

Limoges CSP has proven itself to be kryptonite for Valencia Basket. The French champs recorded an 82-67 victory over visiting Valencia for the second win in as many weeks over a club that had been undefeated prior to last week’s Last 32 Round 3 defeat by Limoges. Both teams now sport 2-2 records in Group I, though Limoges boasts the potential tiebreaker between the sides. Limoges is now 2-0 since Coach Dusko Vujosevic took over. Bo Mcalebb scored 15 points in 19 minutes to lead the winners, Leo Westermann tallied 11 points and 7 assists and Nobel Boungou-Colo posted 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, including a steal and slam for a 20-point difference in the fourth quarter that started the celebrations. The game was close for much of the first half before the hosts scored the last 7 points of the second quarter to lead 32-39 at the break. Antione Diot and Rafa Martinez fueled a 0-10 Valencia run that gave the visitors a 3-point edge, but Limoges used a 15-0 surge to make it 62-50 at the end of the quarter. Diot tried to rally Valencia in the fourth, but Limoges pulled away for good. Martinez finished with 17 points, Diot added 15 and Fernando San Emeterio scored 10 in defeat.

Second-chance baskets by San Emeterio and Justin Hamilton gave Valenca a 1-4 start, but Ousmane Camara scored twice for the hosts. The game remained tight as Boungou-Colo and Jon Stefansson traded triples. McCalebb’s first two baskets gave Limoges a 14-9 advantage, but back-to-back threes by Bojan Dubljevic and Guillem Vives pushed Valencia ahead. A pair of Martinez threes to end the quarter made it 18-23 for the visitors. The Limoges defense suffocated Valencia to start the second quarter and the score was tied after a Mark Payne triple. However another Vives three-pointer and Martinez free throws gave Valencia a 30-31 edge midway through the quarter. Limoges finished the half on a 7-0 surge to take a 39-32 cushion into the break.

After Martinez kept it close, Valencia pushed on with a 0-10 run led by Diot and Martinez to grab a 43-46 lead. A Martinez steal lead to a San Emetrio layup and a 47-50 edge. Then Limoges clamped down and held Valencia without a point for the last three and a half minutes of the quarter, while seven players scored in a 15-0 surge to make it 62-50. Diot came up with a basket-plus-foul and a three-pointer to bring Valencia within 6 two minutes into the fourth quarter, but that was as close as it would get. Westermann scored the next 5 points, Heiko Schaffartzik buried a three and a Boungou-Colo steal and slam had the fans celebrating an 80-60 lead. Valencia narrowed the gap in the final two minutes, but the crowd at Beaublanc was already dancing.

"[This game] bears resemblance to last week in the result, but I think that the development of the game was different. In the first game, they were very successful with their three-point shooting. Today we defended with lots of energy, we were very physical and we adapted. We started the second half well and the game was even, but the end of the third quarter was terrifying for us. I am concerned about the contributions that we have had today as a team, which usually does not happen to us. This is something to analyze and improve. This defeat leaves us in a delicate situation, not so much for today, but because we has already lost at home. It's a difficult situation, but we depend on ourselves and although we are clearly at risk, I have confidence that if we do the things we know we can, we will be okay."
