Fenerbahce dominates Madrid from start to finish

Fenerbahce Istanbul put on a show for its fans at Ulker Sports Arena on Thursday by dominating defending champion Real Madrid 100-78 to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five Turkish Airlines Euroleague Playoffs series. The series moves to Spain for Game 3 – and if necessary, Game 4, - next week. With the game tied early in the first quarter, Fenerbahce used a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. Ekpe Udoh provided many of the highlights in a 16-3 start to the second quarter and Madrid never threatened after that. Udoh led a balanced Fenerbahce attack with 18 points on 7 of 9 shooting, Nikola Kalinic added 17 with just 2 missed shots, Bogdan Bogdanovicscored 16, Bobby Dixon made 9 of 10 free throws en route to 14 points and Luigi Datome totaled 12 points. Sergio Rodriguez led Madrid with 15 points and Luka Doncic scored 10 as Madrdi suffered its worst-ever loss in the playoffs.

First quarter: Datome, Udoh set tone for hosts

Datome shined early by capitalizing on a Bogdanovic steal for a layup and then scoring on the offensive glass. Rudy Fernandez got the visitors going with a three-pointer, but Udoh made it 6-3 with a put-back slam. Felipe Reyes tied it with a three from the wing. Datome and Rodriguez traded baskets before Pero Antic drilled a three for the hosts. Dixon drove into the paint for a floater-plus-foul before Bogdanovic finished with a layup in transition. Ayon threw down a monster alley-oop slam on Gustavo Ayon and the bonus free throw that came with it. A Madrid timeout changed little as Bogdanovic’s steal and score capped a 13-0 run for a 21-8 Fenerbahce advantage. Fernandez tried to revive the champs with a triple and the Madrid defense kept the hosts without a point for nearly three minutes, but did not gain much traction as Kalinic soared for a tip-in that made it 23-12. After Antic and Sergio Llull matched free throws, Udoh scored inside to end the quarter at 27-14.

Second quarter: 16-3 charge gives Fenerbahce total control

Udoh put his stamp on the game with a jump shot, a layup and a blocked shot in between all in the first minute of the quarter. The difference was 20 after a Ricky Hickman triple. Jonas Maciulis muscled his way for a basket inside, however Bogdanovic knocked down a triple and Udoh rejected another Madrid shot. Kalninic and Udoh sandwiched baskets around a single Rodriguez free throw to make it 41-17. Kalinic went coast to coast for a layup that capped an 18-3 charge. K.C. Rivers danced into the Fenerbahce defense for a layup, but Bogdanovic answered with a triple that pushed the margin to 27. Rivers split free throws and Ayon put back a Rodriguez miss. After a timeout, Ayon scored again and Dixon and Rodriguez traded threes. Antic and Rodriguez each scored at the rim before Bogdanovic’s catch-and-shoot triple left the hosts ahead 54-29 at halftime.

Third quarter: Madrid rallies to get within 18

Udoh missed for the first time in the game and Rodriguez nailed a triple for the visitors. Udoh was soon back on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws. Rodriguez fed Reyes for a layup and the point guard followed that with a layup to make it 57-36. Maciulis narrowed the gap to 20 with a put back. Llull connected on his first three-pointer of the series to bring Los Blancos within 59-41 midway through the quarter. After a timeout, Fenerbahce regrouped with 7 straight points: 2 Dixon free throws, a Datome three and an Udoh put-back. Andres Nocioni nailed a three at one end, but committed an unsportsmanlike foul on Dixon at the other. Dixon made the resulting free throws and Datome nailed a three as the lead grew to 72-44. Dixon’s steal led to free throws and a 30-point margin. Rodriguez drove for a layup and Bogdanovic nailed a long jumper. Jeffrey Taylor banked in a shot that ended the quarter at 76-48.

Fourth quarter: Fenerbahce refuses to let up

Taylor opened the quarter with a three from the corner, but Kostas Sloukas countered with a basket-plus-foul. Taylor drained a second three and Rivers knocked down free throws after an unsportsmanlike foul by Antic. Kalinic scored on three straight possessions, including an alley-oop slam thanks to Sloukas’s long pass. Jaycee Carroll sank a floater for Madrid, however the difference reached 30 again on a Melih Mahmutoglu triple. Teenager Doncic got his first 2 points with free throws for the visitors. Hickman connected from downtown for a 91-60 lead with five minutes remaining. Maciulis put back his own miss and Hernangomez added free throws. Kalninic continued to score and Antic threw down a wicked slam as Fenerbahce put away an impressive victory.

"After we won the first game two nights ago we really tried to make an analysis and understand what would be necessary for tonight’s game. I am really very satisfied how we played tonight. Our defensive game gave us the energy and confidence to play really good offense. They tried to play man to man in a different way, and in one moment also tried to play zone press. But we led after first half 25 points, that is not normal against a team that is Euroleague title contender. But we were concentrated, focused almost until the last minutes. Really congrats to my players on big win tonight. I must thank our fans for great atmosphere, they support us in phenomenal way. Connection we have with them is very important to us. Now, what I said to players, after Game 1 was the half step, this was first step, but we need one more win to go to the Final Four, which is our big goal. We don’t expect it will be easy in Madrid, but we must believe in our possibilities, go there with confidence and play the best game we can. I made substitutions so the players that played a good game get applause. Kostas Sloukas was the highest scorer in Game 1 with Bogdanovic. Tonight he did not force it, he played for the team. He is a point guard who understands the game, and he played for the team. It was another great game by him. For Nikola Kalinic, everyone will say he had a great game now that he scored 17 points, but he has a very specific role on our team and he is very important for us."
LASO, PABLO

"Congratulations to Fenerbahce on the win, they lead 2-0. Not much to say about the game. First half they outplayed us physically and mentally, we could not match their intensity. Game was almost finished in the first half. We tried in the second half, but margin was too big. It is true that Sergio Llull did not play good in two games here, but he is a guy who always gives energy on the floor and I always expect the best of him. Great players always have good and bad games, much more good than bad games. I don’t think Llull played good here, but he is a very important for us. In Madrid we have the same chances as we did here. It will be very difficult. Fenerbahce is a great team, and if we want to beat Fenerbahce we have to play much better than we did in Game 1, and for sure much better than we did tonight."

"Great win for us. Great atmosphere. Everything we wanted before the game, we got it. In the end, 22 points is really unreal, but we played excellent I think. Mainly our offense was clicking on all cylinders and also on defense we were great. We go to Madrid and must stay serious and take one more game. "
RODRIGUEZ, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"A terrible game for us from beginning to the end. They played way much better than us. We have to see what we did today and in Game 1, and be ready for them on Tuesday in Madrid. Fenerbahce is defending better than us, they are not letting us to play the way we usually do. In these two games we did not find a way to make good plays and play better offense. "
