Unicaja Malaga took sole possession of first place in Group B of the Torneig de Básquet Júnior “Ciutat de L’Hospitalet” with a 64-61 victory over reigning NIJT champion Fiatc Joventut Badalona on Saturday. Fernando Alonso scored 21 points and Jose Alberto Jimenez added 17 as Malaga improved to 2-0 in the group. Joventut dropped to 1-1 despite 12 points from Xabi Lopez and 11 from Sergi Costa. Malaga led 5-4 when Alvaro Reyes knocked down two three-pointers in a 0-12 Joventut run for a 5-16 lead. And the margin was 9-18 after one quarter. Alonso and Romaric Belemen-Dzabatou both knocked down long balls as Malaga started the second quarter with a 10-0 run for a 19-18 lead. Costi and Marti Fonolla were on target from long distance in helping Badalona go up 22-28. Unicaja answered with the next seven points but trailed 29-32 at intermission. After Alonso got Malaga to within 35-36, Zoran Nikolic and Costi increased the gap to 35-42 and Joventut was leading 41-48 after three quarters. Lopez gave Joventut a 44-52 cushion early in the fourth but Malaga answered with a 7-0 run. After two free throws by both Jimenez and Kenan Karahodzic to open a four-point lead, Francesc Iturria nailed a three-ball for Joventut. Jimenez answered with a long ball of his own only to see Lopez hit a trey with 13 seconds left to bring Badalona back to within 62-61. But Enrique Cortes made his free throws with 10 seconds left and then Iturria missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with six seconds to play.
