Panellinios won its Eurocup home opener by outlasting GasTerra Flames 68-51 on Tuesday. The score was tied 26-26 at halftime and the Dutch Flames were within 3 midway through the third quarter before a 14-1 charge bridging the third and fourth quarters lifted the hosts for good. Maurice Bailey led the winners with 15 points, Samo Udrih scored 11 and Manolis Papamakarios 10 as Panellinios improved to 1-1 before visiting undefeated group leader Galatasaray Café Crown next week. Matt Haryasz paced the Flames with 12 points and 9 rebounds and John Turek added 11 points and 12 boards in defeat, GasTerra will seek its first win against Bennet Cantu at home next week.

Jason Dourisseau got the visitors on the scoreboard first before Udrih tallied Panellinios’s first points. The teams traded scores early before Andre Brown put the hosts up 10-6. Turek responded to keep the Flames close before Udrih gave Panellinios a 16-12 lead after 10 minutes. Turek opened the second quarter with a three-point play to narrow the gap to a single point, but Evangelos Sklavos scored on the offensive glass to make it 20-15. Haryasz and Jason Ellis combined for 6 straight GasTerra points and a narrow lead for the Dutch champs. Bailey followed for Panellinios as the lead changed hands. Henry Bekering’s basket-plus-foul restored GasTerra’s small cushion before a Markos Kolokas free throw evened things at 26-26 at halftime.

Udrih and Joe Krabbenhoft gave the home team a narrow cushion to start the second half. Stephen Ross scored for the visitors and Haryasz added a key basket. A Turek free throw kept the Flames in the fight at 37-34 midway through the third quarter, but Panellinios was just getting started. Free throws by Bailey and Krabbenhoft increased the led before Djuro Ostojic scored twice in a 12-1 run that made it 49-35 at the end of the quarter and gave the hosts total control. Vasilis Xanthopoulos added a layup to open the fourth quarter before Ross finally responded for GasTerra. But Panellinios slowed the game in the final minutes and never let the Flames get close as the home team celebrated its first win.
