Real Madrid knock out Darussafaka and return to Final Four

Real Madrid completed a 3-1 series victory over Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul on Friday with a 78-89 victory in Game 4 at Volkswagen Arena. Madrid will return to Istanbul next month for the Final Four and meet Fenerbahce in the semifinal. Sergio Llull scored 17 points and dished 5 assists to lead a balanced Madrid attack that featured five scorers in double figures. Trey Thompkins added 15 points, including 8 in a 0-10 second-quarter run that gave the visitors the lead for good. Anthony Randolph also scored 15, Jaycee Carroll netted 12 and Luka Doncic tallied 11 points and 7 assists and Gustavo Ayon posted 8 points and 8 rebounds. Brad Wanamaker led Darussafaka with 25 points, Scottie Wilbekin scored 14, Will Clyburn 11 and James Anderson 10 as the team bowed out after making history by reaching the playoffs for the first time in club history. Darussafaka trailed by as many as 17 in the fourth quarter, but rallied to within 6 with two minutes to go. Ultimately Coach David Blatt’s men were undone by poor three-point shooting (6 of 27, 22.2%).

Wanamaker opened the scoring with a deep three, but it did not take long for Madrid to heat up with 11 straight points – 5 of which came from Llull - to take a 5-11 advantage. After a Darussafaka timeout and a pair of substitutions, Wanamaker got to the line to end the hosts’ drought. Darussafaka regained its momentum and the lead on Adrien Moerman’s steal and slam, but Randolph and Llull each buried threes in a 0-9 surge to make it 12-20. Anderson stepped up at both ends for the hosts who rallied to within 1 before Ayon put Los Blancos up 21-24 after 10 minutes. Ante Zizic’s three-point play pushed Darussafaka back on top, 28-26. Thompkins took center stage with 8 points and a block in a 0-10 Madrid charge, during which Doncic added 2 points and 3 assists for an 8-point Madrid cushion. Zizic made a hook shot and Will Clyburn netted free throws to refresh the Darussafaka offense. The pace slowed as a result of numerous fouls at both ends, with the visitors benefitting more to stretch the lead to 34-43. Wilbekin scored his first points via free throws and added a tough shot in the lane to make it 38-45 at the break.

Llull buried a long jumper two minutes into the second half to give Madrid the game’s first double-digit lead, 38-49. Wanamaker responded with a basket-plus-foul and Anderson later added a three-point play. When Wilbekin connected from downtown, the hosts had closed the gap to 49-52. However Madrid’s offense remained hot and Jeffrey Taylor got the margin back to 9. After Luke Harangody was called for a foul on Carroll, the Darussafaka player and his coach were both called for technical fouls. Carroll made the resulting 5 free throws and then Doncic added 2 more to give Madrid a 58-72 advantage after 30 minutes. Madrid continued to pump its lead with a Rudy Fernandez three making it 60-77. The home crowd never stopped supporting Darussafaka, which rallied to within 76-82 on Clyburn’s layup with two minutes to go. Llull stepped up with a critical three-point play, which seemed to deflate the hosts. Llull added 2 more free throws with 54 seconds remaining to ice the game and series.

I know well what that means and what that feeling is and what it takes to reach the Final Four of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, particularly this year when the league was the strongest it’s ever been in history. And that’s an accomplishment for them and they’re to be congratulated. I am very proud of our players for their EuroLeague season that we gave. I think we’ve proven to everyone that we are a team of the highest level in every respect, as a competitive group, as an organization, as players and as management and certainly as a unit that has built a very interesting and diverse fan base who will go with Dacka from this day forward for many years to come and that’s an important thing as well… We lost 3-1 to the best team, up to this point, in Europe in a series. It’s a fair result; they are a better team, now. We are not happy that we didn’t manage to win here at home, but it doesn’t change what a good season we had. "

"I think we controlled most of the situations against a team that is very difficult to control. In the first half we were winning by 7 points and the difference probably should have been higher. But in the third quarter we continued our way. We made some little mistakes, but we gained a great advantage. They came back, but we were able to keep our composure and win the game. Our fan base increased after each game. We can be proud of ourselves for all we achieved."

"We're pleased with the job we've done. We came here with a tough task ahead of us, but we produced some very focused performances and booked our place in the Final Four. The key was our strong defense and to not allow them to sink treys or easy baskets. That's where the difference was. We knew that it would be tough because they never give up.
