Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir routs Trabzonspor

Newcomer Lazeric Jones and big man Colton Iverson as Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir stormed back into the race to reach the knockout stages by routing fellow Turkish foe Trabzonspor Medical Park 43-76 on Tuesday. The result left the two teams with 2-3 records in Group K, but Karsiyaka recorded both of its win over Trabzonspor and now holds the tiebreak between them. Iverson finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds, Jones amassed 13 points, 4 assists and 2 steals and Bracey Wright added 11 points and 3 steals as every Kasriyaka player scored at least one basket. The hosts led 16-15 late in the opening quarter before a 0-12 run helped Karsiyaka to a 15-point halftime lead, which grew to 25 through three quarters and peaked at 36 in the fourth. Andrija Stipanovic and Damian Kulig led Trabzonspor with 10 points each. /p>

Both teams missed their first two shots before Iverson got the visitors on the scoreboard and Stipanovic scored for Trabzonspor. Ryan Thompson gave the hosts a lead, but Josh Carter countered with a Karsiyaka triple. A three-point play by Can Altintig gave Kasiyaka a 4-point edge, but Trabzonspor stayed close and then went ahead after Kulig connected from downtown and set up Stipanovic to make it 16-15. Jones had the last basket of the quarter to make it 16-17 after 10 minutes. Jones buried a triple to start the second quarter and Kulig split free throws. From that point, Karsiyaka pulled away with a 0-12 run in which Wright scored half the points and Jones and Carter nailed triples for a 17-32 lead. Kulig and Ibrahim Yildirim made free throws for Trabzonspor, but a pair of Iverson baskets left Karsiyaka up 21-36 at the break.

Kulig made a three early in the second half, but Jones set up Kenny Gabriel twice before taking a steal in himself for a 24-44 advantage. Novica Velickovic tried to spark the hosts, but back-to-back triples by Kerem Gonlum and Wright extended the lead to 27-53. Gani Erdi Gulaslan split free throws to bring Trabzonspor within 30-55 through three quarters. Even with what appeared to be an insurmountable lead and no tiebreaker to play for, Karsiyaka continued to pile it on the hosts. Gonlum scored twice in a 0-10 start to the fourth quarter that made it a 35-point advantage. The lead peaked at 31-67 and Karsiyaka didn’t finish its concert until late baskets by Inanc Koc and Muhammed Baygul ensured that every one of Karsiyaka’s players had scored.

Head Coaches

MARKOVIC, NENAD
Trabzonspor Medical Park
"It is difficult to speak after a defeat like this. I would like to congratulate Karsiyaka and apologize to our fans who came here. We completely disappeared after five minutes in a very important game. We can make many excuses, but there is no excuse as a coach for t his performance. "
SARICA, UFUK
Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir
"It was an important game for us. If we lost this game we would have been out of the competition. We were very focused. Our great defense forced them to shoot three-point shots and this ensured that the victory came early and quickly. We now need to win our next game and probably will need to win the [tiebreaker]. We played good against Besiktas [in the Turkish League] and we continued with this performance. The adaptation of our new players is also important. I wish Trabzonspor good luck in their next game."

Players

STIPANOVIC, ANDRIJA
Trabzonspor Medical Park
"It was embarrassing the way we played today. From the beginning we played bad. We lost Dwight [Hardy], but this isn’t an excuse. I apologize to all our fans. There was a great turnout and I hope they will continue to support us."
IVERSON, COLTON
Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir
"It was an important game today. It was not easy to win four times in a row. We forced them in defense and we got a pretty easy victory."
