Byars, Hernangomez lead Seville to big road win

Baloncesto Seville collected a prestigious win by downing Telenet Ostend 72-84 on the road in Group L on Wednesday. Seville and Telenet Ostend join Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius in a three-way tie for second place, each with a 2-3 record. Seville has a tie-break disadvantage with Rytas and Ostend, which face each other next week, and has therefore run out of chances to make it to eighthfinals. PGE Turow Zgorzelec is mathematically first in Group L while Rytas hosts Ostend in a do-or-die game to reach the next round. Derrick Byars led the winners with 20 points. Willy Hernangomez added 14 while Nikola Radicevic had 11 and 6 assists for Seville. John Prince led Ostend with 15 points. Wes Wilkinson added 11, all in the third quarter, for the hosts. Prince allowed Ostend to get a 18-17 lead after 10 minutes and a layup by Ben Woodside gave Seville a 37-38 edge at halftime. Ostend led 57-50 late in the third quarter but Byars, Hernangomez and Pierre Oriola fueled a mamooth 5-32 run which allowed Seville to get a big road win.

Woodside, Hernangomez and Kirk Penney fueled a 1-10 opening run for Seville. Jared Berggren stepped up with a put-back layup and Pierre Antoine Gillet added a three-pointer but a dunk by Ondrej Balvin gave Seville a 6-12 lead. Guy Muya stepped up for Ostend and a three-pointer by Prince gave the hosts their first lead, 15-14. Prince singlehandedly kept the hosts ahead, 18-17, after 10 minutes. Berni Rodriguez downed a triple and Penney hit a technical free throw but Gillet tied it again, 21-21. Kristaps Porzingis sank a jumper which Rodriguez followed with a bomb from downtown for a 21-26 Seville edge. It didn't last long, as Prince and Khalid Boukichou combined for 9 points in an 11-2 run which put Ostend back ahead, 32-28. Ostend still led 35-31 but a three-point play by Hernangomez, free throws by Penney and a big basket by Woodside gave Seville a 37-38 edge at halftime. Penney scored again soon after the break but Dusan Djordjevic and Wilkinson gave Ostend a 41-40 lead. Porzingis sank a jumper but Wilkinson hit back-to-back three-pointers in an 8-0 run which made Seville call timeout at 49-42. Wilkinson hit another triple and Berggren added a layup-plus-foul to make it an eight-point game, 55-47. Three-pointers by Byars and Radicevic brought Sevilla within 57-56 after 30 minutes. Pierre Oriola and Byars took over early in the fourth quarter to boost the guests' lead to 57-66, after a game-changing 0-16 run. Prince scored down low but Seville kept finding easy baskets. Byars hit another three-pointer and consecutive dunks by Hernangomez sealed the outcome, 62-77, midway through the fourth quarter. Seville needed a 31-point win to stay alive in the competition but managed to grabbed its last road triumph in the 2014-15 Eurocup.

"We did not lose the game during the fourth quarter but at the end of the third quarter, when we were 8 points in front and went to 1. Why? I am afraid that three games in five days is too much for this young team. But that is no excuse. If you are not fit to score, you can still defend well. 17 turnovers is too many against this good team. We now have to play a perfect game in Vilnius if we want to qualify. That is very difficult against a team that normally wins home games by 20 points."
CASIMIRO, LUIS
Baloncesto Seville
"I am very happy my team showed a good reaction and strong mentality after we went behind. That is very important for me after one week in charge of this team. During the fourth quarter we played great defense with strong switches and excellent rebounding. On offence we used the space and had some great passing. The Eurocup is great for the team, but our situation is very difficult in the ACB League and that is now our main concern. Ostend, they can still win and qualify in Vilnius. "
