The Take

  • Did you Know That ... Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul | Real Madrid
  • Vitoria-Gasteiz 2019: Team Averages
  • Stats attack: Game progression
  • Both teams come off their most disappointing loss of the season and will try to bounce back with one last win. Fenerbahce registered a 19-point loss against Anadolu Efes Istanbul and missed the chance to reach its fourth consecutive EuroLeague championship game. Real was officially dethroned and missed its chance to win back-to-back titles for the first time since 1968. As always in the third place game, the team that moves on and puts its semifinal loss behind will have a better chance to win.

    Marquee matchup

Rotations may be different in this game and it is hard to figure out who will sit out, but both teams will surely be fully competitive. With Jan Vesely not 100%, Nicolo Melli is expected to see extended playing time for Fenerbahce. He had 28 points in the championship game against Real last season. Melli will not have it easy against Walter Tavares, whose size, long arms and great timing can change any game on defense. He also has the best two-point shooting percentage in EuroLeague history (74.1%).

    Earlier this season

These teams traded home wins this season. Fenerbahce topped Real 65-63 on December 28 behind 17 points from Luigi Datome, who is currently injured. Fenerbahce used an 8-0 final run, which Datome capped with a three-point play to win the game. Real defeated Fenerbahce 101-86 at home, becoming the first team to score over 100 points against a Zeljko Obradovic-coached squad in a non-overtime game in EuroLeague history. Anthony Randolph led the way with 21 points, while Sergio Llull added 17.

    Keys to victory: Fenerbahce

With more injury problems than its opponent - Joffrey Lauvergne is also sidelined and Nikola Kalinic and Vesely are not 100%, Fenerbahce relies on Kostas Sloukas and Ali Muhammed to control the game tempo. Those players combined for 12 points against Efes, while Vasilije Micic and Shane Larkin combined for 55. It will be a good opportunity to prove their value. Fenerbahce needs Melli to take Tavares out of the paint with outside shots and must rely on Marko Guduric and Erick Green to take charge of the game from the three-point line.

    Keys to victory: Real

Real has a size advantage in the paint with Anthony Randolph, Walter Tavares and Gustavo Ayon, so making the most out of that is mandatory against Fenerbahce. It had 29 assists and just 4 turnovers in its previous win against Fenerbahce, so getting close to those numbers would almost guarantee a win. Experienced players like Jaycee Carroll (7 minutes against CSKA) and Felipe Reyes (did not play) will probably see significant playing time and having a deeper bench may help Coach Pablo Laso's team to play with a higher rhythm.

    Head Coaches

    Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul
"We are very proud of our fans. This is the Final Four in which we had more Fenerbahce fans inside the arena, so thanks to them. This means they trust us and they are really important to us. I will say it one more time, we are very, very sorry because we came into this situation in which we had a lot of problems and were not at the level to fight and try to be in the final one more time, but I hope they will help us next season. We will try to play well on Sunday but the score is not very important. We have many injured players and a lot of problems. Both teams have important games coming up; we start the Turkish League playoffs and Madrid plays in the Spanish League on Tuesday, so the game preparation is not like in a regular game."
    Real Madrid
"We will try to win, as in every game we play, of course. Obviously, when you come to the Final Four, you expect to play the championship game and win it, but it what it is. We have to move on and it is a difficult game to play against a great opponent which was the regular season winner. It will be a tough, complicated game which we will face in the best way possible. Many times, the first issue to solve in the third place game is the mental one; You play it less than 48 hours after a painful loss in the higher stages of the competition, but it is also important to take into account that we are here, in the Final Four, and the work you did throughout the season. This will be our 35th EuroLeague game and just 9 losses, which tells you we have a good winning record against the best teams in Europe."

    Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul
"Even though it seems like an unimportant game, it's a game that both teams have to find a way to enjoy, most of all to stay healthy and our playoffs are starting, so we have to get physically and mentally ready, They have important games coming up. The main thing is to enjoy and make sure the fans enjoy also. We have to respect the game, we have to respect the opponent and we have to respect the fans."
    Real Madrid
"It will be a tough game. Fenerbahce has had an amazing season this year and it will be competitive."
