Brose Baskets tops Sassari to stay perfect.

Brose Baskets Bamberg topped Banco di Sardegna Sassari 83-72 to become the exclusive leader of Group J. An 11-2 final run fueled by the duo of Rakim Sanders and Elias Harris made the difference for the home team. Anton Gavel tallied 11 of his 21 points late in the first quarter, Harris bagged 15, Sanders 13, Jamar Smith netted 11 and Novica Velickovic added 10. Maik Zirbes amassed 9 points and 9 boards in victory. Drew Gordon collected 19 points, 14 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 blocks for an index rating of 32 for the visitors; Caleb Green chipped in 16 and Omar Thomas 12, while Marques Green dished 10 assists.

Green scored from long distance to give a 4-10 margin to Sassari early in the game, but Gavel was on fire and scored three times in a row from downtown before adding 2 free throws for a 20-12 margin for Brose Baskets after 10 minutes. The German champs kept running, capping a 16-0 run with Smith from beyond the arc, to lead 28-12. Marques Green sounded the charge for the visitors, but Velickovic’s 5 consecutive points denied their first attempt to come back, 36-22. D'Or Fischer excited the crowd with a huge dunk. Green’s jumper and three put the guests closer, but Zirbes with back-to-back dunks left a comfortable 47-34 advantage to Bamberg at halftime. Banco di Sardegna returned from the lockers and sparked an 11-1 run fueled by four different players and capped by Drake Diener to make it 48-45, but quickly Gavel and Zirbes re-established a double digit difference, 55-45. Brian Sacchetti made consecutive three pointers to stay within 57-53. Harris posted free throws to finish 59-53 after the third quarter. Velickovic raised again the margin to 64-55 from long distance, but a 3-9 answer by the guests with back-to-back dunks made by Gordon cut the cushion to just 67-64. Harris and Gordon made layups to close to 72-70, Thomas’s put back in-between three pointers of Sanders and Harris kept the guests alive with two minutes left. Another three drained by Sanders and the following basket of Harris sealed Brose Baskets’ win.

FLEMING, CHRIS
Brose Baskets Bamberg
"Sassari is a very uncomfortable team with very experienced players. They play really well together at a really high pace. We had a lot of respect for how how good they are as a team. It didn’t help that we learned just before the game that Zack would not play with back problems. We did a pretty good job making it a half-court game. Sassari is really fast. I think the times where they got away from us were on our turnovers. Otherwise I think we did a pretty good job slowing them down and we found guys to get hot at the right time."

Players

GOLDSBERRY, JOHN
Brose Baskets Bamberg
"We turned the ball over too much, but we got guys to get hot; Anton in the first half and Rakim hit some big shots down the stretch. I think defensively we held them pretty good, we had turnovers and they had a lot of second-chance points. But at least we got the win. That’s always the goal. "
SACCHETTI, BRIAN
Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari
"It was a tough game because we knew that Brose Baskets is a Euroleague team. They played really strong. We had a strong approach on defense. But we had a blackout for five minutes and they used that to pull ahead. We came back stronger in the second half, but then the three three-pointers decided the game. "
