Lokomotiv Kuban outlasted Banvit BK 75-67 in Krasnodar, Russia, on Tuesday to improve to 1-1 in Group E. Banvit also dropped to 1-1. Jeremiah Massey led the winners with 22 points, 12 rebounds and a performance index rating of 32, Rod Blakney added 13 points, Maxim Sheleketo 11 and Ali Traore and Maxin Grigoryev drilled 10 each. Chuck Davis scored 15 for Banvit, Baris Ermis added 14 and Keith Simmons chipped in 12 others. The hosts tried to escape early in the game with a 12-0 run, but Banvit was back ahead 52-53 early in the third. A crucial 14-2 Lokomotiv run to start the last quarter made the difference.
Lokomotiv started the game on fire with a 12-0 run capped by Grigory Shukhvtsov from the foul line. Cliff Hammonds from downtown stopped a three-and-a-half minute scoreless streak for Banvit. After Massey scored from the foul line, Chuck Davis and Baris Ermis hit back-to-back mid-range jumpers to close within 16-11. Blakney hit triples and Erkan Veyseloglu scored from closer to make it 22-15 after 10 minutes. Massey started the second quarter scoring 6 points in a row. Simmons answered along with Lance WIlliams to get to 28-21. Banvit improved its defensive pressure, and Davis scored in the open court for 29-27. A Bykov three-pointer made it 34-29. Baris and Ali Traore both made short jumpers and with three minutes left to halftime, Lokomotiv was up 38-33. Maxim Sheleketo scored from downtown with a second left, capping a final 8-2 run by the home side to lead 46-37 at halftime.
Sheleketo scored again from beyond the arc to start the third quarter and give a double digit margin, 49-37, to the home team. Ermis scored 6 in a row and Williams hit from midrange to close to 49-45. Massey converted a three-point-play and Lokomotiv tried again to escape. Baris gave a 52-53 advantage to Banvit, the first of the night at the midway point of the quarter. Maxim Grigoryev answered from downtown and a Traore jumper made it 57-53. Davis scored the additional free throw after a jumper and Veyseloglu grabbed an offensive board to score and give Banvit again the lead, 57-58. Blakney scored easy points to finish the break and make it 59-58 at the end of the third quarter. A 14-2 Lokomotiv charge opened the last quarter, with an astonishing dunk and a triple by Massey, to create a comfortable 73-60 cushion with four minutes left. The visitors tried to answer, but the momentum was all for the home team. Simmons hit a three pointer, but Blakney sealed the win with a layup before Simmons completed a three-point-play that fixed the final score at 75-67.
