Hall fuels Promitheas to victory in Ulm
Promitheas Patras continued its strong debut season in the 7DAYS EuroCup with a tough 67-70 road victory over ratiopharm Ulm to improve to 2-1 and a share of second place in Group A. Langston Hall starred for Promitheas with 16 points and 11 assists, while Octavius Ellis posted 14 points and 8 rebounds and Oleksandr Lypovyy added 13 points. The hosts led 67-65 in the penultimate minutes, but Promitheas scored the game's final 5 points to claim the win. Zoran Dragic tied his career-high with 17 points to lead Ulm, Grant Jerrett posted 14 points and 11 rebounds and Seth Hinrichs scored 10. The loss dropped winless Ulm into sole possession of last place in the group.
Ulm started strong with the game's first two baskets - including a throwdown by Jerrett. The visitors stayed close and took their first lead, 9-10, on a Hall-to-Ellis alley-oop. The lead changed hands a few more times before the first quarter ended at 19-20. Lypovyy struck from downtown as Promitheas stretched its lead to 22-26, but Ulm scored on its next two possessions to tie the score. The hosts tied it three times, but soon Lypovyy connected from downtown again and scored on a put-back to give Promitheas a 31-38 edge. A three by Dragic made it 34-38 at the break. The teams traded baskets for much of the third quarter, with Ulm getting within a shot of the lead several times. Hinrichs sank a triple to even the score at 49-49. Dragic soon gave Ulm its first lead since the first quarter and Hinrichs made it 53-50 through three quarters. Promitheas scored the first 8 points of the fourth quarter, including a go-ahead triple by Dimitris Agravanis. Hall scored a three-point play to extend the margin to 55-61. Jerrett scored the game's next 4 points and Dragic tied it at 63-63 with 3 minutes to play. The same player put Ulm ahead with free throws. Chase Fieler drained a go-ahead three for Promitheas inside the final minute and Hall added a floater with 14.4 seconds left that made it 67-70. Andreas Obst missed from downtown in the closing seconds as Promitheas ran home victorious.
Telling numbers
Ulm outshot Promitheas from every range and nearly matched the visitors on the boards (38-39), but committed 18 turnovers, which were 4 more than Promitheas. Those six extra possessions that Promitheas enjoyed made all the difference in a game that was decided by 3 points.
The battle at the paint
The highly-anticipated matchup between Killian Hayes and Langston Hall had a clear winner. The Promitheas point guard did what his team needed and when it mattered most - including the last basket.
Good break, bad break
Ulm finished the third quarter in great form, while Promitheas looked shocked. The break before the last quarter was bad for the former and good for the latter, as visitors started the final stanza with a 2-11 run that changed everything.
Did you notice?
Promitheas guard Chris Babb made his first visit to Ulm as an opponent. Babb began his European career with two seasons in Ulm between 2015 and 2017. The combo-guard was happy to leave with a victory, but he did not fare well on the rims he once enjoyed shooting at... Babb was 0 for 9 on three-pointers in this game.
What’s next?
Promitheas will seek its first home win when it hosts Segafredo Virtus Bologna on Tuesday, October 22. The following evening, Ulm will target its first win when it visits AS Monaco.
