Kresimir Loncar - Khimki Moscow Region - EC13 (photo BC Khimki)Khimki Moscow Region rolled on Wednesday night in a home game against Maccabi Haifa Bazan by 87-48. Since the starting 9-0 the hosts never looked back and played almost perfect keeping Maccabi at a minimum and dishing as many as 27 assists in the process. Khimki is now leading Group K with a 2-0 record while Maccabi drops to 1-1. Kresimir Loncar led the winners with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Marko Popovic added 14, and Paul Davis and Petteri Koponen contributed 10 apiece. Dagan Yivzori led Maccabi Haifa with 11 points and Donta Smith added 10.

Khimki Moscow Region started the game on a roll with a 9-0 burst that was only stopped by Moran Roth's layup, 9-2. Nikita Balashov slammed the ball for a 15-4 as Khimki was already up to 6 assists while Maccabi Haifa had up to 5 turnovers in minute 7. In the last steps of the first quarter, Khimki squeezed in a few more points to make it 19-5 after 10 minutes. Marko Popovic rained a three at the beginning of two for the 22-7. Maccabi could only get a few points from the stripe at this moment, something that Khimki used to pull away a little more, 29-8, after a new Popovic three. A timeout didn't seem to change things much for the guests despite Dagan Yivzori's efforts to score and get his team closer. At the halftime break, Khimki prevailed 45-24. Maccabi had 9 turnovers and a 6 of 25 from the field. Two more threes boosted Khimki's start to the second half of the game. Donta Smith was up to 8 points trying to be in command of the guests once more, but Khimki's was moving the ball with precision adding points and assists to its column, 56-30. There was no stopping Khimki as the burst escalated to 17-4 with Alexandr Zakharov's new three for 73-33 to close the third quarter. The last quarter had no history as both teams had assumed their role in the game and there were no outstanding runs up to the final buzzer with a 87-48.

Head Coaches

KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Khimki Moscow Region
"I would like to congratulate my players on their attitude to this game, dedication and devotion as it’s a very good example to everyone how you should compete and try to do your best despite some technical mistakes and turnovers in the offense. I think that diligence and endeavor are better than skill. I didn’t expect the game to be so easy, because Maccabi is a very good team that won the Israeli championship last season and competed with Maccabi Tel Aviv in their previous game. I would like to give credit for my players for their defense."
FRANCO, DANNY
Maccabi Haifa Bazan
"It was a tough night for us as we played against one of the best teams in Europe. We could have played much better and should have, but it was the team on the other side that was much better than us in every aspect of the game. In the long run we can learn how to compete with such players. Khimki is probably the best team we met so far. We should have played our best level. We need to put this game behind us, as tough as it is, and move further. Our competition is not with Khimki, but with the other teams in our group and we’ll try to get the second ticket to qualify for the next round. We have great respect for Khimki and excellent coach Kurtinaitis. I wish them all the best in the next games."

DAVIS, PAUL
Khimki Moscow Region
" We knew it would be a very tough task for us, probably the hardest in the Eurocup so far. We came out with great focus from first minute and we’re really happy right now. Hopefully we can continue our winning streak. I think our defense in the first quarter was the main problem for Maccabi; our defense won this game. They are a good team and we know we have the return game. So regardless of the score we played focused for all 40 minutes. "
YIVZORI, DAGAN
Maccabi Haifa Bazan
"We came to Khimki as a clear underdog and had expectations to develop our defense and try be aggressive. We didn’t really show up in the first half and Khimki shot very high percentage shots tonight. That’s it; the game was done after the first quarter pretty much. We lacked energy to bounce back to the game. No doubt, we lost to a better team. So we’ll try to beat other teams in our group if we want to qualify for the next round."
