Zenit St. Petersburg clinched a spot in the Eurocup Eighthfinals with a 61-73 victory over Strasbourg on Tuesday night. Zenit improved to 3-3 in Last 32 Group G and dropped Strasbourg to 3-3, but Zenit finished second because it beat Strasbourg twice. Zenit will meet Khimki Moscow Region in the eighthfinals. Kyle Landry scored 15 points, Walter Hodge tallied 13 points, 7 assists and 5 steals, Cameron Jones also scored 13 and Dalenta Stephens posted 10 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Zenit used a 0-11 run that bridged the first and second quarters to take the lead for good. It lead 28-35 at halftime and further boosted the lead by holding Strasbourg to just 9 third-quarter points as it pulled away. Tadija Dragicevic led the hosts with 16 points and Ali Traore added 11.

A Louis Campbell three-pointer and Bangaly Fofana free throws helped the hosts to a 10-5 start. A Fofana slam pushed the difference to 7, but Zenit scored the final 7 points of the quarter. Hodge’s follow-basket evened the score at 14-14. Zenit took its run to 11 unanswered points with baskets by Stephens and Jones. A Pavel Spiridonov tip-in made it 17-22. Threes by Campbell and Jeremy LeLoup brought Strasbourg within 1, however Zenit put together another strong finish to the half with baskets by Artem Komolov, Dejan Borovnjak and Hodge. Antoine Diot split free throws to make it 28-35 at the break.

Threes by Hodge and Dmitry Kulagin gave Zenit a double-digit lead early in the second half. The defenses stiffened up as neither team scored for three minutes. Zenit held Strasbourg to just 9 third quarter points. A second Kulagin triple and Hodge’s steal and layup ended the quarter at 37-52. Back-to-back three-pointers by Dragicevic and LeLoup gave Strasbourg some hope. Zenit boosted the lead to 14 on a three by Jones, but a Diot triple and Traore basket made it 50-59 with five minutes remaining. However the hosts could do no more than trade points with Zenit in the closing minutes as the visitors held on for the win and ticket to the eighthfinals.

Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Strasbourg
"We showed impatience during the first half. Zenit was relaxed in the second quarter. We had energy at the beginning of the game, but the reserves were not in the rhythm. It is from there that St. Petersburg took the lead. They played with a lot of control. We had no solutions. They played hard and we did not respond. They defended very well and we attacked poorly. We played a very good Eurocup season, but we missed the game that we could not lose. This is a real disappointment. We will draw lessons for the rest of the season."
KARASEV, VASILY
Zenit St Petersburg
"It's a good win. We are very pleased. It was an important game for both teams. Strasbourg is a good team, which beat Kazan twice. They had their fans to support them. It was a very tough match. We defended very well, especially during the second and the third quarters. We made three-pointers. Tonight all the players were important to win this big game."

Players

LELOUP, JEREMY
Strasbourg
"We are very disappointed. We didn't want to miss the qualification. We should not have lost to Nymburk and St. Petersburg. They dominated us physically. We had a little stress. We lost our basketball tonight. It was very hard tonight. We wanted to win this game. We'll have to raise our head for the championship of France and draw lessons from this failure. We still need to improve."
