Avtodor Saratov beats Strasbourg to finish Eurocup season on a winning note

Avtodor Saratov held on for an 87-80 victory over Strasbourg to finish its Eurocup season on a winning note. Avtodor improved to 3-3 in Group H, which it finished in third place. The result denied Strasbourg a chance to win the group; it advances to the Eurocup Eighthfinals with a 4-2 record and will meet EWE Baskets Oldenburg in the next stage. Jeremy Chappell made 5 of 6 three-pointers en route to 29 points, while Travis Peterson added 18 points, Reggie Williams scored 13 and Paul Stoll registered 12 assists and 6 steals for the winners. Roddy Beaubois paced Strasbourg with 23 points and Romain Duport, Bangaly Fofana and Jeremy Leloup added 10 points apiece.

Fofana scored first for Strasbourg and Peterson opened Avtodor’s account. Beaubois hit a three and Kyle Weems scored, stole a ball and set up Mardy Collins for a layup and a 4-10 Strasbourg lead. Chappell heated up with 4 points to tie the game at 12-12 midway through the opening quarter. A Chappell triple gave Avtodor the lead. Beaubois and Duport kept the visitors close, but Chappell made another triple for a 24-20 lead after 10 minutes. Leloup sank a three and Matt Howard added a tip-in to put the visitors ahead early in the second quarter. Artem Klimenko and Chappell each scored to put Avtodor ahead 30-27, but Fofana soon tied it. Williams sandwiched 4 free throws around an Alan Makiev basket to put Avtodor on top, but Duport inside and Weems from downtown ended the half with the teams close, 36-35.

Louis Campbell opened the second half with a pair of three-pointers and Duport added a basket for a 36-43 advantage. Peterson heated up with 7 points before Chappell added a three-point play and Peterson sank a three-pointer to cap a 13-2 charge for a 49-45 lead. Leloup answered with a triple, but Chappell countered with a pair of threes. After Collins and Beaubois closed the gap to 3, Chappell and Williams connected on back-to-back threes. Williams made it a double-digit lead with a technical free throw. Beaubois made a basket-plus-foul before Paul Stoll gave Avtodor a 66-57 edge through three quarters. Beaubois and Howard made it a 5-point game, but Stoll answered from downtown. However Fofana scored inside and Leloup buried a three to bring Strasbourg within 69-67. Fofana then tied it, but Evgeny Kolesnikov responded with back-to-back triples. Beaubois ralied Strasbourg back to within 75-73 and then to 77-76 with just less than four minutes on the clock. A three by Williams kept Avtodor confident, but Strasbourg kept coming and went into the final minute down 3. Peterson made a pair of crucial free throws for an 85-80 lead before scoring the game-clinching basket after a Zabelin steal.

Head Coaches

ANTSIFEROV, VLADIMIR
Avtodor Saratov
"It was a very good game, we set up a very aggressive attack and defense. Due to the fact that we played aggressively, we made many mistakes in attack. Perhaps we play better, more aggressive, more beautiful for our fans, but something did not work. At some point, we lost the initiative, but laterwe returned to it and finish the match."
COLLET, VINCENT
Strasbourg
"We wanted to play a good game. We had already qualified, that is the main thing, but we wanted to keep going because we have a lot of important games to come. We will play the French Leaders Cup and the Eurocup eighthfinals just after that. It was important for us to stay in the rhythm. I think we had a chance to win but they hit some big shots at the end of the game."

Players

KOLESNIKOV, EVGENY
Avtodor Saratov
"At the end of the match, we snatched the victory. The whole game, we put pressure on our opponents, who were tired from their difficult trip to Saratov. For us, this game was very important, we had to win."
