Alba Berlin escapes from Kragujeavc with overtime win

Reggie Redding - Alba Berlin - EC13 (photo Radnicki)Alba Berlin escaped from Jezero Arena in Kragujevac with a 75-85 overtime win over Radnicki to remain undefeated in Group N. Reggie Redding tied the game at the end of regulation, while Vojdan Stojanovski opened a final 10-0 run for Alba to get the win. Cliff Hammonds collected 21 points on 3-of-4 shooting from long distance. Stojanovski scored 14, Leon Radosevic added 11 and Redding 10 for the winners. Marko Marinovic was the main contributor for Radnicki with 15 points and 8 assists, Stefan Bircevic and Sava Lesic drained 14 points each.

Alba opened the game with 5 points in a row, then increased the margin to 8-17 with back-to-back layups by forward Levon Kendall. Late in the quarter, after Stojanovski and Marinovic exchanged three-pointers, the home team got closer, 17-22. Radosevic beat the buzzer from mid-range to go on 19-25. Stojanovski hit from downtown and gave a 24-29 advantage to Alba, while a Marinovic jumper from mid-range put Radnicki in front 30-29. The teams took the lead with slim margins and just in the last two minutes, a Dusan Mladjan triple and a three-point-play completed by Radenko Pilcevic extended the cushion to 40-34 as the half finished. Hammonds tied at 42-42 with free throws at the midway point of the third quarter, and Jonas Wohlfarth with a put back gave an advantage to Alba, before a three-point-play completed by Nikola Kalinic tied it again at 47-47. Lesic’s dunk put in front Radnicki, while free throws scored by Marinovic and Kendall tied the game again at 52-52 after 30 minutes. The teams exchanged leads five times early in the last quarter, before a triple from Hammonds and Radosevic’s layup seemed to raise the guests' confidence, 61-66. Radosevic again from mid-range made it 62-68, but 8 consecutive points for Radnicki put them in front on 70-68 after a free throw nailed by Bircevic. Both sides missed attempts from the foul line; only Redding was perfect with 12 seconds left for another tie 71-71. Stefan Jovic missed the potential three to win the game, sending the teams to the overtime. Jovic opened the extra session splitting free throws, but Hammond hit a jumper for a 72-73 Alba advantage and then the guests never looked back. Lesic tied it at 75-75, but Stojanovski answered from downtown a few seconds later and King also from long distance in a final 0-10 run for the victory.

"We were so nervous at the start of the game. In the first 10 minutes we had seven turnovers. We have some players on the bench, but they are inexperienced. However, we did not give up during the game; we gave our best and fought. Again we lost in the end - the early mistakes and missed free throws. Against the stronger teams my players have to shoot better. They do not have the same European experience as Alba. This is a great team. We turn to the ABA league, it is now most important for us."

"I am pleased with the win, I expected a tough game. Congratulations to our conditioning coach Markovic, who prepared the team. This is our seventh game in 16 days, with all the traveling. We started poorly, with a lack of concentration. In the first half we had problems with obstruction. This is an important win for us; we have ambitions to go further. Jezero is very rough court, it was not easy to deal with. A lot of players contributed. I believe that Radnicki can surprise Strasbourg if they play like tonight. Radnicki is always a favorite at home."

"This is the third game we have lost in the same way. But we raised our form and that is essential. Some more details are missing in the final minutes; we’ve made mistakes at the end. I feel bad that we lost in front of our crowd; we had a chance to win. Alba is a good team. We fought to the end and showed that we can spoil plans for every team. We lack experience, like that the final burning desire to finish the game. We have no calculations, each next game is a final for us."
