Zielona Gora advances with road win in Venice!

Stelmet Zielona Gora booked its spot in the Eurocup Eighthfinals by picking up a 58-68 road victory over Umana Reyer Venice in Group L. Dee Bost scored 19 points and Mateusz Ponitka collected 12 points and 12 rebounds as Zielona Gora finished second in the group with a 3-3 record, tie for second place with MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg. Zielona Gora won their head-to-head tiebreak for a larger victory in the road wins they split with each other. Zielona Gora will face Unics Kazan in the two-game eighthfinals. Boris Savovic paced Venice with 15 points and Josh Owens scored 14 points in the loss, which dropped the Italian team to 2-4.

Owens got Venice on the scoreboard first with Dejan Borovnjak evening it for the guests. Tomas Ress followed with 2 three-pointers as the hosts moved ahead 10-5. Pontika and Bost both knocked down long balls as Zielona Gora led 10-13. Two baskets from Adam Hrycaniuk and another three-pointer from Bost left Zielona Gora up 18-22 after 10 minutes. Stefano Tonut opened the second quarter with a three-ball for the hosts and 2 free throws from Owens put Venice back in front. The lead switched hands on the next three baskets and Lukasz Koszarek’s three-pointer made it 27-30 for Zielona Gora. Owens and Bost both scored 2 more baskets as the lead changed hands 4 more times with the guests ahead 33-34 at intermission.

The lead went back and forth four more times to start the second half with Borovnjak putting back an offensive rebound and Vlad Moldoveanu nailing a triple for a 38-42 advantage. Michele Ruzzier answered right back with a three-ball for Venice but Przemyslaw Zamojski made 3 free throws and a three-pointer to help build a 45-54 lead. The margin was 48-54 after 30 minutes. Savovic opened the fourth quarter to cut the margin to 4 points, but Venice went scoreless for almost 5 minutes and Ponitka tallied 5 points in an 0-8 run as Zielona Gora pushed ahead 50-62 with 5 minutes to play. Savovic stopped the drought with a three-pointer and Jarrius Jackson added a three-point play to get the hosts to within 57-62 inside the 3-minute mark. But Zielona Gora would hold Venice to just 1 point the rest of the way and Bost hit 4 points to finish off the hosts for good, sending the visitors ahead in the competition.

Head Coaches

RECALCATI, CARLO
Umana Reyer Venice
"It was a strong and tough game, considering right know were are facing an emergency of available players. We played a close game, never quit from it. Stelmet is an athletic and physical team and on the long distance those skills came out. Anyway we tried our best, we honoured the Eurocup till the end, we have taken Reyer and Venice names around the Europe and this experience will help us in the future."
FILIPOVSKI, SASO
Stelmet Zielona Gora
"I'm very happy both for the win and the qualification. I got too much respect for coach Recalcati and for his contribute to the European Basketball. This on was a tough game, we could not score easy basket in the first half, we missed a lot of shot under the basket but the great job in rebounding gave us the chance to win."

Players

OWENS, JOSH
Umana Reyer Venice
"We did not do a good job rebounding, offensively we did not execute well. They are a strong team and the played really aggressive. We are disappointed to get out the competition but this experience will help us. Now we have to focus on the championship to finish it as strong as possible."
MOLDOVEANU, VLAD
Stelmet Zielona Gora
"Very difficult game, we knew Umana was a good team. It was a "Win or Go Home game" and both teams knew there were no other chances instead of win. It was a very physical game, seemed a playoff one. Defensive battle in both sides, great pressure and intensity."
