Madrid cruises past Buducnost to stay perfect
Reigning Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion Real Madrid kept its perfect record intact with a no-doubt-about-it 89-55 win over visiting Buducnost Voli Podgorica on Thrusday night in the Spanish capital. Madrid became the first team with four wins this season, and sits in the first place in the standings where CSKA Moscow could join it on Friday. Buducnost dropped to 0-4, in a share of the last place with Khimki Moscow Region. Anthony Randolph and Jaycee Carroll led Los Blancos with 11 points each and Edy Tavares controlled the paint with 10 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks. Nemanja Gordic scored 13 for Buducnost.
Madrid got a triple apiece from Randolph and Fabien Causeur in the opening 90 seconds to take control, but the visitors stuck around. Gordic had a jumper and made a three-point play that got Buducnost within 14-13, but Randolph, Gustavo Ayon and Sergio Llull made sure the hosts stayed in front. Madrid led 21-15 after 10 minutes, before Facundo Campazzo fueled a 9-0 run early in the second to extend the margin to 30-17. Buducnost struggled on offense, but Alen Omic helped the team close the deficit and make it 32-25. However, Rudy Fernandez nailed a pair of triples to restore a double-digit lead and help Madrid take a 44-31 advantage into halftime. Jeffery Taylor opened the third quarter with a corner triple and Llull hit one in transition, too, capping a 10-0 run and opening a 54-31 margin. Coty Clarke snapped the visitors’ five-minute scoreless drought midway through the third with their first triple of the night, but another three-pointer from Taylor increased the lead to 25 points. Madrid took a 65-44 cushion into the fourth quarter, but had no intentions of slowing down. The hosts scored the first 8 points in the fourth which opened a 29-point lead, and the reigning champs cruised the rest of the way.
Leaders and scorers
Madrid had four scorers in double figures. Randolph and Carroll each scored 11 points. Tavares was dominant with 10 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks in only 18 minutes, and Taylor scored all of his 10 points in the third quarter. Each one of Madrid's 12 played scored at least 2 points in the victory. Gordic paced Buducnost, scoring 11 of his 13 points in the first half, and Omic finished with 10 points plus 8 rebounds.
Hidden stat
Madrid did most of the job at the start of quarters. Buducnost scored the first basket of the second quarter, but Madrid answered with a 9-0 run. Madrid did not allow a single point for almost five minutes during a 10-0 run to start the third quarter and opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run.
Stellar stat
Madrid’s 28 assists in this game is a season-high by any team in the EuroLeague this season.
