In the highest scoring game of the season, Bilbao Baskets used the extra session to edge Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari 94-100, and improve to 2-0 atop of Group B on Wednesday. The two teams combined to hit 26 three-pointers, but the unlikely hero for Bilbao was its center Antanas Kavaliauskas who scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Kavaliauskas also grabbed 9 rebounds, while Alex Mumbru scored 18 plus 7 rebounds, and Dairis Bertans hit 4 of 5 triples for 17 points. German Gabriel added 12, and Fran Pilepic 11 in victory. Drake Diener had 23 points on 5 of 9 behind the arc, while Marques Green sunk all 4 three-point attempts, finishing with 19 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds for the hosts. Caleb Green had 11 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, while Brian Sacchetti scored 10 points in defeat.

Both teams shot well from downtown from the start of the game, as as Drake Diener and Omar Thomas hit for Sassari, while Dairis Bertans and Raul Lopez scored from long range for Bilbao. The visitors started pulling away with close range baskets from Jackie Carmichael and Axel Hervell for 12-15, and then ended the quarter with three-pointers from Fran Pilepic and Mindaugas Lukauskis for 18-25 after 10 minutes. With more triples from Pilepic and Lopez at the start of the second quarter, Bilbao opened 22-35 advantage. But the hosts rallied in the final 4 minutes of the half with 5 triples of their own. Drake Diener and Marques Green each hit a couple, and Brian Sacchetti nailed one as well, helping the hosts cut the deficit to 41-46 at halftime. The hosts regained the lead with baskets from Marques Green, Sacchetti and Thomas, and teams traded leads throughout the second half. Pilepic hit a triple to give Bilbao 61-62, but three-pointers from in front, but hosts went back in front, keeping the slim margin with a help of triples from Manuel Vanuzzo and Sacchetti for 75-71. But Kavaliauskas got it going, and Bertans nailed a triple as Bilbao regained 77-80 lead. But Drake Diener scored a basket plus foul, and Caleb Green’s put-back sent the game into overtime, 82-82. German Gabriel and Alex Mumbru opened the extra session with baskets from close range, but Drake Diener triple on the other end, helped tied it 88-88. After Bertans and Caleb Green traded threes, Alex Mumbru’s layup and a triple made it 91-96 with 67 seconds to go, and Kavaliauskas sealed the deal.

Head Coaches

SACCHETTI, ROMEO
Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari
"We started without the same intensity we had in the last games. They moved the ball around well, and they went inside the paint, and they went in with confidence. When we started playing more aggresive defense, we got back in the game. We made a big effort in the last quarter, but we have to work better at rebounding and playing inside the paint, because we know what is the physical level needed to play in Europe. Bilbao played very well, and they punished us when we made mistakes. We wanted to win, but tonight wasn’t enough."
PUEYO, RAFAEL
Bilbao Basket
" First of all, I’d like to thank the fans of Sassari. They are a great crowd. We played a great game, it was good basketball. I’m satisfied with the game my team played because we tried to control the game. We only had six turnovers, and this is excellent. I think that Sassari is a really good team and I don’t know how many teams will be able to beat them."

GREEN, MARQUES
Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari
"I don’t care about my best game in Sassari, we lost and I’m not happy. We can do better on defense and at rebounds, because this is the key to our game. We have to work in these kind of situations. We made a big effort but we have to improve. It’s not a surprise that Bilbao is a great team, and they played with experienced European players… but we try always to win."
GABRIEL, GERMAN
Bilbao Basket
"It was, for sure, a tough game and we made a real effort on defense to stop their offense. We passed the ball, we played against their defense. It was an important win for us, especially in overtime, where we played very well. It was a great win for us."
