Valencia routs Bayern at home

Eurocup reigning champion Valencia Basket had a strong start in its two-way eighthfinals series by downing FC Bayern Munich 80-58 in Game 1 at home on Wednesday. Valencia has a 21-point in the series, which now moves to Audi Dome in Munich, Germany for Game 2. Bojan Dubljevic led the winners with 18 points. Pau Ribas added 16 for Valencia. Vasilije Micic led Bayern with 19 points. John Bryant shined early to give Bayern a 5-10 lead. Dubljevic stepped up for Valencia and a three-pointer by Guillem Vives tied it at 16-16 after 10 minutes. Heiko Schaffartzik shined in an 0-8 run which gave Bayern its biggest lead, 21-29. San Van Rossom, an outstanding Dubljevic and a buzzer-beating layup by Rafa Martinez allowed Valencia to get a 37-33 edge at the break. Ribas had 8 points in a 16-2 run which he capped with a triple for a 53-37 Valencia margin. Valencia improved its lead to 61-44 after 30 minutes and kept a very valuable margin from that moment until the final buzzer.

Anton Gavel got Bayern going with back-to-back layups. Martinez sank a six-meter jumper which Dubljevic followed with a triple for a 5-4 Valencia lead. Jon Bryant scored off a steal and added a reverse layup in a 0-6 Bayern run which gave the guests a 5-10 lead. Martinez made free throws and a jump hook by Dubljevic kept Valencia within 9-10. Jan Jagla and Dubljevic exchanged layups and free throws by Micic restored an 11-14 Bayern lead. Kresimir Loncar and Vives helped Valencia tie the game, 16-16, after 10 minutes. Micic struck from downtown early in the second quarter. Vladimir Lucic and Vladimir Stimac traded jumpers and a triple by Vives tied it again, 21-21. Micic fed Jagla for a backdoor layup, igniting a 0-8 run highlighted by Schaffartzik's consecutive jumpers. Pau Ribas and Van Rossom stepped up for Valencia and a jump hook by Dubljevic made it a two-point game, 27-29. Bryant and Van Rossom traded baskets and an alleyoop layup by Pablo Aguilar tied it again, 31-31. Dusko Savanovic hit a baseline jumper, Nemanja Nedovic answered with a driving layup and free throws by Dubljevic completed Valencia's comeback, 35-33. A buzzer-beating layup by Martinez fixed the halftime score at 37-33.

Robin Benzing swished a five-meter jumper immediately after the break which Dubljevic bettered with a three-pointer. Free throws by Luke Harangody and yet another triple by Dubljevic made it a double-digit game, 45-35. Savanovic nailed a five-meter jumper which Ribas bettered with a three-pointer. Van Rossom scored in penetration and Ribas capped a 16-2 run with another triple, good for a 53-37 Valencia lead. Micic followed a six-meter jumper with a fast break layup and Stimac dunked but Ribas and Loncar kept the hosts way ahead, 59-43. A jumper by Lucic made it a 17-point series, 61-44, after 30 minutes. Lucic kept pacing Valencia with an alleyoop layup early in the fourth quarter. Micic sank a triple and followed Jagla's layup with another bomb from downtown that gave Bayern hope at 63-52. Lucic hit a three-pointer off a Valencia timeout and Loncar hit another one from the same exact spot to ignite the crowd at 69-52. Martinez and Micic traded layups but a triple by Ribas and a put-back layup by Aguilar made it a 22-point series, 76-54, as Van Rossom left the game with an injury. Jagla struck from downtown but all Valencia fans were celebrating a big win which Ribas rounded with a wild three-point play.

"First of all, congratulations to my team, but this is only the first half of this series. I believe, like I said yesterday, that defense was the key to this game. We played better in the first half, tougher, and we had a lot of doubts, especially on offense. We didn't shut down our defensive boards. Our defensive level was almost perfect in the second half, with great commitment from all of my players. We showed our talent on offense - a lot of players found points due to their talent. We are happy with this 22-point lead, but we still have to play Game 2 in Munich. It will be a totally different game; I expect Bayern with very different toughness and aggressiveness. I think that the physical level of the game is marked by the competition itself. We played against a very demanding physical team and that's what I expect in Munich. This is what you expect in the Eurocup against a team that plays at a high physical level. We managed to match their physicality and do even better than them at times, so I am happy for that."

"It was a game in which we saw a team playing great basketball, with intensity, especially on defense, with great attitude and aggressiveness, helping each other. Valencia showed excellent defense, not only tactically, that's a second step. It showed intensity, aggressiveness and that allowed them to develop their game. Stats are not always important, but Valencia tied the first quarter, won the second by 4 and the third by 13. Valencia played an excellent game and you have to respect that and congratulate them. We are down 22 points; it is very difficult to overcome that and qualify. We know how to play in this situation and get out of this situation but being honest, we have to say that Valencia is in a good rhythm and Game 2 will not be easy. We have to analyze this game and prepare the team to win Game 2. The game is over, Valencia played a great game and we are not as bad as we showed today. We can play better but have to show that - and have a chance to do it next week."

This is still a very interesting series and it not over by any means. Defense was huge. This is probably one of best defensive games this season. It definitely showed. That was a key to the result. Our defensive energy was amazing. "

"The work we did last season helps us, because few teams are used to playing two-game series in early March. Every defense, every rebound counts and if you are not able to score, stopping them at the other end is very important. The game changes a bit. We may have been a bit nervous at the beginning of the game, trying to win the game too fast, but once we calmed down, we saw we were the better team and started to play better. We got a good lead, but need to play a good game to win the series."
