Willie Deane bounced back big time in leading Lukoil Academic into the ULEB Cup Last 16 with a comfortable 55-73 victory at BK Ventspils in the Last 32 return leg. Lukoil came into game with a 3-point victory at home and outscored Ventspils 15-2 to finish the first half and allowed just 8 fourth quarter points in winning the two-game series on a 140-119 aggregate score. Lukoil, which will meet up with Dynamo Moscow in the Last 16, was led by Deane who had 23 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals and 0 turnovers after struggling to just 4 points and 7 turnovers in the first leg. Haris Mujezinovic tallied 16 points while Riste Stefanov had 12 and Pero Antic collected 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jimmy Baxter did all he could to help Ventspils, scoring 29 points along with 4 rebounds and 2 steals. The next-best scorer was Pavels Veselovs with 7 points. Akin Akingbala had just 2 points, while Justin Love scored 3 points and Uvis Helmanis 6 points.

Baxter tipped off the game for the hosts, but Deane soon matched. Helmanis's three-point play was followed by a three from Antic. Two scores by Mujezinovic gave Lukoil its first lead 8-9. Four straight points by Stefanov made it 12-15. Baxter's 11th point of the first quarter trimmed the deficit to 16-17, to which Stefanov answered with a triple. But Helmanis hit from downtown, and Martins Skirmants's basket left the score 21-22 after one period. Larry O'Bannon's foul shot and Deane's three started the second for Lukoil. Love and Veselovs both hit from downtown as Ventspils pulled back ahead 28-26. But Deane tallied 6 points and Mujezinovic had 4 as the guests finished the second quarter on a 2-15 run for a 30-41 lead at the break.

Baxter opened the second half, but O'Bannon's triple started a run that gave the guests a 32-48 lead. Two Deane free throws made it 37-54 before Ventspils tried a final spurt to get back into the game. Baxter hit three baskets, including two three-pointers as the hosts closed the third on a 10-2 run to trail 47-56 after three periods. But Mujezinovic scored two baskets to start the fourth and spark a 2-9 run for a 47-65 advantage. Baxter tallied twice only to be answered by Antic and Deane. And Baxter's basket to make it 55-69 was Ventspils's final score of the game.

"Honestly, I am very disappointed and I do not know actually the reason for our loss today. Maybe after a day or so I will be able to draw some conclusions. First of all, Lukoil showed a really great quality of game today. They were better throughout the game from the first to the last game. They were simply better, today we had no chances against them. This was a totally different game in comparison to the one we played in Sofia. We were preparing, we were improving our game, but nothing of it was shown on the court. My players did not feel the game. After the first two minutes I already knew that we were in big trouble, the first quarter was more or less OK, but afterwards it was a mess. Today we played only with one player, both on defense and offense I saw only Baxter! I don't know, maybe they were scared, maybe burned, tried too hard... I really don’t know. The final result shows the quality of the game, we made 16 turnovers, missed open shots, I won't even mention the shooting percentage from the free-throw line. And on the home court, you can’t beat a team like Lukoil, if you play like that. Akingbala, Vitols, Gabrans, Helmanis who are supposed to be our leaders were lost in this game. I don't know why. My congratulations to Lukoil and I would like to thank our fans who filled the gym fully and showed a great spirit."

"I would like to congratulate my team for the performance they showed today. I am very pleased with the outcome of the game and we definitely deserved this win. Ventspils had a bigger pressure on them, for they had lost the first game and I think that was one of the reasons they lost today. Following the first game with Ventspils, we made some conclusions and here you have the result. We managed to stop their offense, you know – Ventspils is a team with great shooters, and usually their shooting percentage from the three-point area is approximately 50%, but today we stopped them there and everywhere else on the court. We had a problem on the offensive glass in the first quarter, but we managed to solve this problem later in the game. Again, I would like to congratulate my players! It is a great success for our team!"
