Real Madrid will play for a spot at the NIJT finals at the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four in Milan as the Spanish powerhouse knocked off reigning NIJT champion Fiatc Joventut Badalona 59-52 in the semi-finals of the Torneig de Básquet Júnior “Ciutat de L’Hospitalet on Sunday. Andrej Magdevski paced undefeated Madrid with 13 points and Daniel De La Rua had 12 for the winners. Jonathan Kasibabu chipped in 8 points and 16 rebounds and Waly Niang added 9 points and 13 rebounds for Real, which out-rebounded Joventut 46-27. Badalona got 15 points from Sergi Costa while Zoran Nikolic added 10 points and 6 rebounds. Real opened the game with the first five points only to see Joventut answer with the next nine points. Badalona extended its lead to 7-14 and it was 11-16 after 10 minutes. Madrid scored the first six points of the second quarter to pull ahead 17-16 and after Joventut hit the next four points, Magdevski tallied seven points in Real’s 16-0 run to close the first half with a 33-20 advantage. Nikolic hit the first four points of the third quarter for Badalona to get the deficit to single digits but Madrid increased the margin to 14 points. Joventut trimmed it back to 10 points but Magdevski’s trey at the buzzer had Madrid ahead 48-34 after three quarters. After Nikolic hit the first four points of the fourth quarter, De La Rua’s three-point re-established Real’s 13-point lead, 55-42 with less than four minutes to play. Costa answered with a three-ball and two more baskets to trim the gap to 55-49 with 1:15 minutes remaining. Francesc Iturria missed a three-pointer with 33 seconds which would have made it a three-point game. And after Andres Rico split two foul shots with 27 seconds, Xabi Lopez was off-target on his three-ball attempt with 20 seconds to play before Madrid iced the game for good from the foul line.
