CSKA opens title defense in style by routing Galatasaray

CSKA Moscow opened the defense of its Turkish Airlines EuroLeague crown in style by routing Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul 84-109 on Thursday in both team’s season opener. In doing so, CSKA set a club record for most points in a EuroLeague game. Nando De Colo led five CSKA scorers in double figures with 22 points with just 4 missed shots, while Milos Teodosic shined with 20 points on 5-of-10 three-point shooting and 11 assists. Aaron Jackson followed with 16 points. Vitaly Fridzon scored 15 in 16 minutes and Kyle Hines contributed 13 points and 7 rebounds. Sinan Guler led the way for Galatasaray with 16 points and 5 assists. Alex Tyus added 15 points, Austin Daye 12 and Emir Preldzic and Russ Smith netted 11 each.

Guler was on fire early with 8 points and an assist through four minutes to keep the game even at 10-10. Hines scored twice in a 1-9 CSKA run to finish the quarter with the visitors ahead 18-27. Teodosic drilled 4 second-quarter threes to propel CSKA to a 45-57 halftime advantage. Tyus sparked Galatasaray after the break and the hosts drew within 5, but De Colo restored a double-digit margin, 71-81, through three quarters. De Colo stayed hot with 5 points in a 0-9 run to open the fourth quarter and CSKA cruised the rest of the way, eventually setting its scoring mark on Vitaly Fridzon’s triple in the closing seconds.

Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"We showed resistance only in the first seven minutes of the game, played our normal game. In the third quarter we also played the game we are supposed to play. When we had to rotate because of tired players, we made big mistakes in defense. CSKA is Europe's best offensive team and they play in a machine setup. We shot at high percentages. We were good in offense, but had trouble in defense. We couldn't score because our defense was not settled."
ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"We expected that Galatasaray has the pride, has the quality, they play in front of an amazing crowd, so they would try to come back. But I think that my players handled very well the game, the pressure they had on them. Despite the fact that this third quarter, and even though we were leading by 13 or something like that, [Galatasaray] finished the quarter without getting into the bonus. We handled the pressure, we had a very good, actually all three ball-handlers. We hit some very crucial threes, but we spread the defense because of our drives. And I think that overall, in the fourth quarter we played very smart defense. I think that overall for the premier, the first game on the road, we have to be satisfied with a win. It’s still the beginning. It’s a long, long, long road to go. "

Players

GULER, SINAN
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"It is very hard to play against the best offensive team in the league and they are one of the teams that has kept the squad for three or four years. But at the same time it was good to come in front of our fans and play basketball. We played 15, maybe 17 minutes of good basketball. But of course against the EuroLeague champion, it’s impossible to win like that. I’m hoping that the new players especially realized what type of basketball we need to play to succeed. "
HINES, KYLE
CSKA Moscow
"It was a very great team victory, especially with the circumstances of their crowd and being on the road. It was a very good first victory for us. I think we played very well on both sides of the ball. Defensively holding them to whatever the score was. We stemmed their run; They had a run at the beginning of the third quarter. We withstood that and were able to push the lead. We showed maturity on our end and I think it’s a good start for the rest of the EuroLeague season for us."
DE COLO, NANDO
CSKA Moscow
"It wasn’t an easy game. We thought coming here it was going to be tough to win. But we stayed focused on our job and this is most important. We know it’s never easy to come and play in Turkey. They always have more motivation at home in front of their fans, but we did our job."
