Nolan Smith - Cedevita Zagreb - EC13 (photo Cedevita)Cedevita Zagreb grabbed its first win in Group B by downing Belgacom Spirou Charleroi 88-75 in the Croatian capital on Tuesday. Nolan Smith paced the winners with 20 points. Jusuf Nurkic added 17 while Goran Suton had 13 on 3-of-3 three-point shots and a game-high 7 rebounds for Cedevita. Spirou dropped to 0-2. Mohamed Abukar led Spirou with 27 points on 5-of-9 three-point shots. Demond Mallet added 14 and 6 assists while Devin Green got 11 for the guests, which trailed 23-22 early in the second quarter. Suton and Kurkic led a 10-0 run that allowed Cedevita to control the game from that moment, 33-22. Cedevita kept a 44-34 margin at halftime, improved it to 66-50 after 30 minutes and did not find much trouble to cruise to a big home win.

Mallet got Spirou going with a three-pointer but Miro Bilan and Marino Bazdaric soon gave Cedevita a 5-3 lead. Darryl Watkins and Green stepped up to put Spirou back ahead, 12-14. Abukar followed free throws with a jumper for a 14-18 Spirou edge. Cedevita found a go-to guy in Nurkic, who singlehandedly gave the hosts a 23-21 lead after 10 minutes. Suton and Marko Tomas fueled a 10-0 run which Nurkic capped with a dunk to boost Cedevita's lead to 33-22. Wen Mukubu and Abukar tried to change things for Spirou but Cedevita kept running the floor and a layup by Nolan Smith forced the guests to stop the game at 42-28. Free throws by Mallet and Christoph Beghin brought Spirou within 44-34 at halftime. Abukar struck from downtown after the break and Mallet gave Spirou home at 46-39. It didn't last long, however, as Bazdaric took over and three-pointer by Suton and Luka Babic gave Cedevita a 56-43 margin. Cedevita kept excelling on offense and managed to get its biggest lead, 64-45, late in the first quarter. Abukar and Green managed to bring Spirou within 66-50 at the end of the third quarter and even closer, 69-61, with 5 minutes to go. It didn't last long, however, as an outstanding Smith made sure to lead Cedevita to an important win.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Cedevita Zagreb
"We have a very long bench and I knew they would have problems keeping up with our tempo for 40 minutes. The way we played in the second and third quarters is the right way to play against teams like Charleroi. But if you allow them to score more than 20 points in a quarter, like we did in the first and second quarters, it could led you to some problems because they have some very dangerous players on offense. It is very important for us to open the Eurocup at home with a win. Every game from now on is very important for us and I want us to play with more consistency in the upcoming games."
BOZZI, GIOVANNI
Belgacom Spirou Charleroi
"Congratulations to Cedevita. They deserved this win. Basketball is a very simple game. Normally, when you shoot better from both two points range and three-point range than your opponent, you lose the game. There has to be some reason for that. Today we committed 20 turnovers and we were also outrebounded. If we solve these problems, I believe we would play much better. Comparing this team to Chalon, I think Cedevita is a much better team. Chalon are really athletic, but Cedevita uses space and reads the game very well, attacking inside and outside on offense."

Players

BABIC, LUKA
Cedevita Zagreb
"It was a very tough game for us. This win is very important for Cedevita and we had to win today in order to stay in the race for the spot in the Eurocup group. I think we played well today. There were some good and bad things in our game, but the most important thing was to get a win. We allowed many open looks to their power forwards. Abukar scored 27 points and we were making some mistakes on defense, but overall we played well."
