Aris overpowers Buducnost for first win

Aris Thessaloniki recorded its first victory of the Eurocup season by pulling away from Buducnost VOLI Podgorica early and cruising the rest of the way for a 75-57 victory. Jerel McNeal led the winners with 17 points, Okaro White posted 15 points and 15 rebounds and Jamelle Hagins added 12 points for Aris, which started 11-2 and led 25-12 after 10 minutes. Tadija Dragicevic paced Buducnost with 16 points and Aleks Maric totaled 13 points and 9 boards. The result left both teams with 1-1 records in Group D.

Hagins scored the game’s first 5 points before Suad Sehovic got Buducnost on the board. The momentum remained with the hosts as Michalis Pelekanos extended the Aris lead to 11-2. Dragicevic sank a triple and Sehovic scored again to keep the visitors in the hunt, but Aris could not be stopped. Free throws by Vassilis Xanthopoulos gave Aris its first double-digit lead. A Theodoros Zaras triple extended it to 14 before Maric free throws drew Buducnost within 25-12 after 10 minutes. Zaras nailed a second three early in the second quarter and Hagins pushed the lead to 31-14. Buducnost fought back with a 0-7 run that Omar Cook capped with a triple. Dominic Waters and Dragicevic swapped triples to make it 34-24. Jake Cohen and Joseph Devoe did the same. Buducnost got within 9 after a Bojan Subotic free throw, but McNeal and White free throws gave Aris a 44-30 cushion at the break.

Slaven Cupkovic connected from downtown to start the second half, but Buducnost responded with a 0-7 spurt highlighted by Maric’s three-point play. White hit back with a triple and a put-back to make it 52-37. White scored again inside and Zaras added free throws to establish the first 20-point lead of the game. Sehovic and Maric brought Buducnost within 62-45 at the end of the quarter. Hagins heated up again to push the lead to 69-48. Dragicevic continued to push the Buducnost attack forward, but the outcome was already clear and Aris marched on to an impressive win.

Head Coaches

PRIFTIS, DIMITRIS
Aris Thessaloniki
"I want to congratulate my players for their seriousness, but also for the energy they had. Undoubtedly Buducnost is a very good team. Its results in the games against Cedevita and Banvit showed its quality. It’s a more experienced team than us and we wanted to take advantage of the areas that we are stronger: To play with energy, press and have strong defense. We did all that and that’s why we won. This victory means nothing. We have a difficult group and we must not be very happy with the victories and very sad with the defeats."
JOVOVIC, IGOR
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"Aris won absolutely fairly. They stopped us with their defense. At some points we tried to get back into the game, but Aris didn’t give us any chancet. Perhaps we were too happy by the victories against Banvit and Cedevita. We have to analyze what happened today and why we had such a bad performance."

Players

MOURTOS, SPYROS
Aris Thessaloniki
"Buducnost is a very strong team. We were focused from the first second of the game and for the biggest part of it. Now we are thinking about the game against PAOK in the Greek League"
MARIC, ALEKS
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"ARIS dominated from the first minute. They pressed on defense from the start of the game and we did not find our rhythm at any point. Our opponent won fairly. Our performance had nothing to do with the previous games against Banvit and Cedevita."
