Banvit steamrolls Partizan in Belgrade

Banvit Bandirma escaped from Belgrade with a 61-77 victory over Partizan NIS to remaining unbeaten after two Group E games. Banvit took the lead for good in the second quarter and never looked back, making the difference with a 12-0 run in the third quarter. Vladimir Dragicevic led the winners by scoring 20 points, Sammy Meija added 13, Earl Rowland tallied 11 points with 7 assists and Keith Simmons scored 10. Partizan got 15 points from Milan Macvan, who also added 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Mihajlo Andric added 13 points and Edo Muric 12.

Dragicevic’s mid-range jumper gave the visitors an early 2-9 margin before a huge dunk by Djordje Gagic cut it to 12-13. Dragicevic remained on fire by scoring 4 more points to keep Banvit ahead 14-19. A three-point-play by Partizan’s latest addition, Macvan, fixed the score at 18-19 after 10 minutes. The home team tied the scoring three times in the first five minutes of the second quarter, the last at 32-32 with a jumper from Muric. A three-pointer made by Candan Berkay and jumper from Keith Simmons extended again the difference to 35-42 for the visitors. The teams exchanged free throws to make it 39-46. Erkan Veyseloglou’s layup close to the buzzer gave a 39-48 lead to Banvit at halftime.

A 6-0 run by the home team capped by Milenko Tepic brought them within 45-48 four minutes into the half, but Banvit went on a 12-0 run capped by Rowland’s easy layup to lead by 15 with two minutes left in the quarter. Andric scored from long distance with 4 seconds left in the quarter to keep Partizan on track at 50-62. Banvit remained in control and Vladimir Veremeenko scored in the paint for a 20y-point game, 50-70. The guests remained in control and Vanja Marinkovic’s triple fixed the final score.

"Congratulations to Banvit on a deserved victory. We knew it is a good team, they showed they are true professionals. At this moment we have our limits and weaknesses. Before the season, I said it will be tough, but I did not expect it to be this tough. We have problems with our playmaking. You could see Macvan’s contribution, but he is still not accustomed to all the plays, especially on defense."

"We controlled the game from the first moment to the last. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. We were not careful in the first half, allowing Partizan 14 offensive rebounds and 15 free throws. That is a lot. After the break, Partizan only took 2 foul shots, and we controlled the rebounds.
