Barcelona wins as Rice stars in return to Tel Aviv

Tyrese Rice made his return to Tel Aviv a memorable one for his new team as FC Barcelona Lassa spanked Maccabi FOX 69-79 on Wednesday at Menora Mivtachim Arena. Rice, who was the Final Four MVP when he led Maccabi to its most-recent EuroLeague title in 2014, scored 8 points in a game-breaking 2-19 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters and gave his team an insurmountable 20-point lead. He finished with 21 points as Barcelona won its second road game in raising its record to 3-2. Petteri Koponen added 14 for the winners and Joey Dorsey posted 11 points and 11 rebounds. Dorsey was instrumental in his team outrebounding Maccabi 21-28, including 10 offensive rebounds. The visitors alos collected 12 steals, compared to 3 by the hosts. Andrew Goudelock led the way with 19 points, Devin Smith scored 18 and Colton Iverson added 10 as Maccabi fell to 2-3.

A driving layup by Sonny Weems ignited a 7-0 run highlighted by Smith's three-pointer. Stratos Perperoglou stepped up with a three-point play and fed Victor Claver for a triple, but Colton Iverson and Yogev Ohayon kept Maccabi in charge, 13-9. Another three-pointer by Claver and a dunk by Ante Tomic gave the guests their first lead, 15-16. A put-back layup by Joey Dorsey kept Barcelona ahead, 18-20, after 10 minutes. Back-to-back layups by Iverson established a 22-20 Maccabi edge early in the second quarter. D.J. Seeley struck from downtown and an outstanding Weems boosted his team's lead to 29-23. A three-pointer by Sasha Vezenkov sparked a 0-13 run in which Rice struck twice from downtown and Dorsey capped with a one-handed slam for a 34-40 Barcelona lead at halftime. A triple by Perperoglou and a fast break layup by Brad Oleson made it a double-digit game, 34-45, right after the break. Smith and Ohayon combined for 7 points in a 9-0 run that brought Maccabi back to life at 43-45. Koponen followed a triple with free throws and Rice added three consecutive baskets to give Barcelona some fresh air at 47-56. A tip-in by Dorsey fixed the score at 47-58 after 30 minutes. Rice and Oleson took over early in the fourth quarter before Koponen capped a 2-19 Barcelona run with a three-pointer that sealed the outcome, 49-69. Smith and Goudelock tried to change things for Maccabi, but it was too little, too late for the hosts.

"We had a lot of turnovers. I think at the end of the day, we went through 10 very emotional days and we were soft. We were missing something. Even our level of basketball wasn’t good; we were lacking energy. Barcelona was better and deservedly won. Our offensive game did not flow and the result is clear… we tried at time to cut off Rice and sometimes we were successful. When we were unsuccessful, he put Barcelona ahead and that’s what went wrong for us. He was able to touch the ball too many times; he’s an excellent player who knows how to run his team. We managed to make him work harder, but in the second quarter he scored a chain of baskets. "

"It was a very important win on the road. It is very difficult to win over here in front of a very tough environment against a great team that was in great timing before the game after two wins in a row in the EuroLeague. We knew before the game that we had a very difficult job to do today, but we were focused, followed our game plan and finally we took one win on the road which is important, as is every EuroLeague win. Somehow we have to forget it immediately because we have a difficult game against Real Madrid in the Spanish League in our home court on Sunday. Also, I would like to congratulate our players because they were very patient and concentrated. We should have won easier because we made 5 turnovers in the final five minutes, when the difference was close to 20 points. We should have managed the situation a little bit better, giving Maccabi an opportunity, with their short lineup, to score some easy baskets in transition and get back in the game. Finally we won, are happy and looking forward to our next game."

"We came out flat today. We have to bring the energy we had at the end for the whole game. They controlled the tempo, offensive boards. But it's a long season, still a long way to go."
DORSEY, JOEY

"Today, the atmosphere here in Tel Aviv was amazing, the fans shout the whole game and it is an amazing atmosphere. We needed this win - like Tyrese said in our last game, it was time to start a winning streak. We have to get rolling and I felt really good today. I tried to help our team win and that is what I did, playing amazing defense and trying to get every rebound that was, because that was the key to win today. I have been working so hard to try to get back to how I was playing last year, being athletic and more mobile on the court. That is how I can help the team on defense and why I am here. Defense helped us win the game."
