INSEP Paris cruised to a comfortable 51-71 victory over Bayern Munich to open play at the ADIDAS NEXT GENERATION TOURNAMENT in Kaunas. Bathiste Tchouaffe scored 24 points while Jonathan Jeanne collected 15 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocks as the 2010 champion improved to 1-0 in Group A play. Stephane Gombauld struggled with early foul trouble but still had 10 points, six rebounds and three steals and Timothe Vergiat added eight points, four rebounds and four assists. Bayern Munich dropped to 0-1 despite Richard Freudenberg picking up 19 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks as the team’s only player in double figures.

Freudenberg scored the first points of the tournament from the free throw line and Lukas Dollinger’s free throw made it 3-0. After Tchouaffe made INSEP’s first basket, Jannik Jebens connected on two more foul shots for a 5-2 Bayern lead. Luc Loubaki’s score gave INSEP its first lead at 5-6. Bayern pulled back ahead 8-6 before INSEP evened it again with the next basket. Jebens finally scored Munich’s first basket of the game at the 4:37 minute mark for a 10-8 lead. Vergiat answered with a three-ball but Alexander Hermann and Karim Jallow scored for a 14-11 Bayern advantage. Tchouaffe sparked the first run of the game with a three-pointer and Gregory Bengaber hit from long range to complete the 1-10 surge for a 15-21 INSEP lead. Hermann cut it to 17-21 after 10 minutes. INSEP’s length defensively caused issues for Bayern and Arthur Leboeuf and Jeanne scored to push the lead to 17-26. Freudenberg’s free throw to make it 18-26 was Bayern’s first point in the second quarter after three minutes of play. Jeanne hit again and Tchouaffe knocked down two free throws for an 18-30 advantage. Freudenberg finally converted Munich’s first basket with 3:43 minutes left in the half, but Vergiat’s free throw kept INSEP ahead 21-33. Munich scored the next seven points with Freudenberg hitting again and Dollinger putting back an offensive rebound to trim the gap to 28-33. But Tchouaffe hit the final three points of the quarter as INSEP led 28-36 at intermission.

After Leboeuf opened the second half, Dollinger scored to make it 30-39. Gombauld answered with two straight baskets after INSEP steals to push the lead to 30-43. Mario Hack-Vazquez hit four straight points for Bayern to trim the deficit to 34-43. But the 2.12m Jaenne proved too tall a task to handle for Bayern as the center scored five points, Gombauld put back an offensive rebound after a missed free throws and Vergiat hit a layup after a steal in INSEP’s 4-11 run to close the third quarter with a 38-54 cushion. Bayern could not come up with any answers offensively in the fourth quarter as the German team missed its first six shots and committed seven turnovers in watching INSEP reel off an 0-14 run to start the final quarter. Tchouaffe scored eight points including two three-pointers in the spurt which extended the lead to 38-68. Freudenberg finally got Bayern on the board with a free throw with 4:06 minutes left to play. Tchouaffe nailed a three to push the lead back out to 30 points – 41-71. But Bayern scored the final 10 points of the game – eight of them by Freudenberg, including a three-pointer at the final buzzer.
