Zygimantas Janavicius - BC Prienai - EC12 (photo BC Prienai)BC Prienai remained unbeaten at home and moved into a tie for first place in Group A with an 84-66 victory over CEZ Basketball Nymburk. Prienai took charge early with a 9-0 run, led by double digits midway through the opening quarter and never looked back. Nymburk started the second half strong and stormed to within 7, but an unsportsmanlike foul brought the momentum back to the hosts and Nymburk never threatened again. Zygimantas Janavicius paced a well-balanced Prienai attack with 16 points – 10 of which came in the first seven minutes. Arminas Urbutis added 15 points and 11 rebounds, Gediminas Orelik also scored 15 and Siim-Sander Vene and Gintaras Kadziulis netted 13 and 12 points, respectively. Rado Rancik paced Nymburk with 19 points and Jiri Welsch scored 12 in defeat.

Welsch scored on the game’s first possession for Nymburk, but the hosts quickly jumped ahead as Janavicius scored 4 points in a 9-0 run. Radek Necas scored for Nymburk, but Orelik nailed a triple and then a three-point play to make it 15-4. Rancik looked to spark Nymburk with a basket inside and another from downtown, but Janavicius sandwiched a pair of threes around a basket by Drew Naymick to restore a double-digit lead at 21-11. The Czech champs slowed the pace, got tougher on defense and held Prienai scoreless in the final three minutes of the quarter, during which Welsch and Rancik combined for 6 free throws to make it 21-17. The hosts regrouped as Vene opened the second quarter with back-to-back three-pointers. Free throws by Welsch and a basket by Petr Benda did little to slow the hosts; Kadziulis extended the lead to 35-21. Then Vene capped an 8-0 Prienai push with a free throw to make it a 20-point game. A basket by Rancik and a triple by Mike Taylor were each matched immediately by Prienai players. Orelik took the advantage to a new high, 50-28, before Rancik and Benda made it 51-34 at halftime.

Nymburk roared back to life after the break. Welsch and Vojtech Hruban provided the sparks in a 1-11 charge to open the third quarter. But just when it seemed the momentum was all Nymburk, Benda committed an unsportsmanlike foul on Urbutis, who turned that into 4 points. Nymburk guards Taylor and A.J. Abrams narrowed the gap to 58-51 before a Kadiulis jumper ended the quarter at 64-53. Arturas Valeika scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter to restore a 15-point advantage. Abrams and Arturas Milanis traded threes, but Nymburk was unable to grab any serious momentum as the hosts closed out a valuable victory.

"We must be happy with today's win, because we beat a team of a high level that has won against many Euroleague teams. I put trust into my men, but I could not expect such a result. I can only praise the players and say they did a great job. I think this year we can surprise even ourselves by going to the next round. Today our game was completely different then it was with Budivelnik. We‘ll see how we do next week."

CEZ Basketball Nymburk
"Congratulations to BC Prienai because they deserved the victory. A couple of times we tried to catch up with them, but we didn‘t make it. They were stronger. BC Prienai did not surprise us at all because from last season we knew that although this team has a small budget, they can play well and they have a good coach. In our group the teams are of almost the same level, but today our players were not ready to win and the competitors were determined to win and they achieved that."
