Nizhny Novgorod rallies from 11 down to beat MZT in overtime

Nizhny Novgorod rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to take down MZT Skopje Aerodrom 88-74 in overtime on Wednesday in Group A. Kenny Boynton scored 14 of his 18 points in overtime to wrap up the second straight win for Nizhny, which improved to 2-1. MZT fell to 0-3. Ivan Strebkov also scored 18 and contributed 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Siim-Sander Vene added 15 points and 10 rebounds, Maxim Grigoryev scored 13 and DeAndre Kane was seemingly everywhere with 8 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists. Xavier Thames led MZT with 18 points, Stefan Sinovec scored 15 and Josh Scott tallied 14 points and 9 boards in defeat.

Strebkov dished a pair of assists as the hosts quickly assumed control with a 6-0 start. Then Strebkov added 5 points to make it 14-5. However Strebkov went to the bench with 2 fouls and Thames heated up with 6 unanswered points that triggered a 1-14 MZT charge that helped the visitors take a 17-21 lead after 10 minutes. Nizhny fought back with a 9-1 second quarter run to regain the lead, which would change hands four more teams before the half ended with Nizhny leading 37-36 on Kane’s buzzer-beater. The game was close for much of the third quarter until Scott took control with 6 points and 3 rebounds in the final two and a half minutes of the stanza in a 2-11 MZT run that made it 51-61. Down 11 with six minutes to go, Nizhny made a late 13-1 run to take a 1-point lead on Kane’s layup and steal with just over a minute remaining. Sinovec split free throws with 28 seconds left to tie it at 70-70 and after both teams missed their finals shots of the quarter, the game went to overtime. Boynton went to work with the first 5 points of the extra session in what ultimately became a 9-0 run to all but wrap up the game.

Head Coaches

STALBERGS, ARTURS
Nizhny Novgorod
"Sometimes it looked like there were two different Nizhny Novgorod teams on the court. Nevertheless we were highly aggressive at the end of the game and that’s what I want from my players. If we keep on moving that way, we’ll get the results we need."
JONCHEVSKI, ALEKSANDAR
MZT Skopje Aerodrom
"It's a pity to lose for the third round of the EuroCup in a row. We controlled the game for 39 minutes, except those five in the opening. Unfortunately we are struggling because some of our starters are injured now. No wonder the players on the court got tired as a lot of them played more than 35 minutes and we didn’t have substitutions for them. I congratulate Nizhny for the win and hope that in the return game we will have our full roster."

Players

GRIGORYEV, MAXIM
Nizhny Novgorod
"The game leaves us with mixed feelings. Our play was far from good, but still we won and that’s the most important thing. For sure we could play better! I’m very glad that we didn’t lower our heads and kept on fighting untill the final buzzer. "
THAMES, XAVIER
MZT Skopje Aerodrom
"It was a tough game. Nizhny played very well at the end of the game. We had a 10-point lead before the fourth quarter, but lost our focus."
