Promitheas tops Virtus for first home win

Promitheas Patras collected its first home victory in the 7DAYS EuroCup by surprising previously undefeated Segafredo Virtus Bologna 78-69 in Group A. Langston Hall scored 16 points to pace five Promitheas scorers in double figures. Dimitris Agravanis added 12 points and Chris Babb, Oleksandr Lypovyy and Leonidas Kaselakis each tallied 11 for the home side, which improved to 3-1 to top the group. Milos Teodosic paced Virtus with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists and Vince Hunter had 14 points and 9 rebounds. Both Kyle Weems and Stefan Markovic chipped in 11 points in the loss. Virtus dropped to 3-1.

Lypovyy started red-hot for the hosts with 5 points and an assist for a 10-0 lead. Virtus needed more than 3 minutes to finally score but then got going with the next 6 points only to be answered by more Lypovyy three-pointers as Promitheas built a 20-8 advantage. The gap was 24-14 after 10 minutes. After scoring 8 of his team’s 14 points in the first frame, Teodosic made it double figures and Markovic’s three-pointer cut the deficit to 24-19. Dimitris Katsivelis’s three-point play pushed the hosts ahead 29-21, but the visitors kept the charge coming and Markovic’s second triple made it 29-28. Weems’s three knotted it at 36-36 and Filippo Baldi Rossi gave Virtus the lead, 36-38, at the break.

After a Chris Babb three-pointer pulled the hosts within 1 point, Frank Gaines made it 39-44. Promitheas continued its strong defense and got a boost off the bench as Agravanis scored 6 points in getting his team back up 48-47. The lead switched hands three more times with Babb and Teodosic both hitting three-pointers and Weems making it 53-54 after 30 minutes. The back-and-forth continued with five more lead changes; Hall opened the fourth quarter and then hit a three-pointer to make it 60-58. A step-back triple from Hall pushed the advantage to 68-62 with less than 4 minutes to play. While the Promitheas defense continued to shut down Virtus, Hall added free throws and assisted on Kaselakis's three for a 73-64 cushion with 92 seconds left. Agravanis added a three of his own to finish off Virtus.

Shortened rotation

Promitheas head coach Makis Giatras used only eight players with center Octavius Ellis unable to go. But the shortened rotation got the work done.

Pivotal performer

Langston Hall heated up just went it was needed most. The Promitheas playmaker scored 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter. He added 1 rebound, 6 assists and 1 steal for a performance index rating of 21.

Telling numbers

Promitheas held Virtus to just 4 of 27 three-point shooting (14.8 percent) and forced 17 turnovers. Virtus also connected on just 9 of 16 free throws (56.3%), which offset its massive rebounding advantage of 49-29 including 21 offensive rebounds.

What's next?

Promitheas heads back on the road and will take on MoraBanc Andorra on Wednesday, October 30. Virtus returns home and will look to get back to its winning ways against AS Monaco that same night.

"Something like this is a great win for our club and for our fans. We played with eight players and everybody gave everything they had and we got a big victory. The Virtus team is like a EuroLeague team with a coach who was in the EuroLeague. A lot of their players were in the NBA or EuroLeague. And this victory gives our team more confidence."

"Congrats to Promitheas Patras. I believe they really deserved this. Nevertheless, we had a very strong effort physically. Our start of the game was not good. It’s the second time that’s happened to us within a short time. It happened three or four days ago [in the Italian League] and we played a similar game to the first half against Varese. We played with anxiety to shoot the ball really quick. Four out of 27 three-pointers is something that is unusual for a team at this level. There were a lot of good shots but also some rushed shots. We didn’t take advantage of our low-post game. We should have put the ball into the low post more and found some solutions with that. But that’s also due to the Patras team, which really played good defense on us. We had a low number of assists, which was because of our bad shooting and I believe we spent a lot of energy coming back in the first half. "

"A very important win, a huge win against an amazing team like Segafredo Virtus Bologna, that everyone will hear all over Europe. It's something more than just a win on the court, this win will improve us as a basketball brand, it's a very important win. Our club and our roster can withstand any injury, all players try our best for the team like Leonidas Kaselakis did today; he stayed focused and played amazingly well in the second half. Patras loves basketball and supports Promitheas in every way possible; this win is for them."
HALL, LANGSTON

"That was a big game. We just kept fighting and stood together all game. We played an amazing team and we just grinded it out. We knew it would be a tough game. They are one of the best teams in EuroCup. They have a great coach, great players and we knew that we just had to play hard and that we can play with anybody."
