Baskonia blows past Darussafaka, opens home account

KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz got back to its winning ways and registered its first home win of the season by topping visiting Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul 82-56 on Thursday night. Baskonia used a strong finish to the second and a good opening of the third quarter to run away to a big win, all while snapping its three-game losing streak. Baskonia improved to 2-3, while Darussafaka registered its third consecutive defeat and dropped to 1-4 in the standings. Tornike Shengelia paced the winners with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Darrun Hilliard scored 12, and Vincent Poirier collected 10 points and 10 rebounds for Baskonia. Veteran center Oguz Savas scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half, and Michael Eric had 12 points and 6 rebounds in the losing effort.

Shengelia and Hilliard combined to score 9 unanswered points as Baskonia took an early 9-5 lead, but Savas was productive inside for the visitors, and Berk Demir hit a triple that helped Darussafaka tie the score. It was 16-16 on the scoreboard after 10 minutes, and Darussafaka used a three-pointer each from each Jon Diebler and Demir to go in front 18-22. However, the hosts forced a series of turnovers while a three from Jayson Granger sparked Baskonia’s 10-0 run during which Janning hit a triple and Vincent Poirier capped it with a big dunk. The hosts led 38-30 at halftime, then in the third quarter increased the margin to double figures in a hurry. Baskonia used two 8-0 runs fueled by Shengelia and opened a 58-36 lead midway through the third quarter. Diebler hit a triple for Darussafaka to stop the bleeding, but Baskonia did not slow down. The hosts used an Ilimane Diop alley-oop dunk to make it 64-41 at the end of the third quarter and the margin grew to 73-46 in the fourth as the hosts cruised to a big win.

Game-changing sequence

Darusafaka led 24-28 in the third quarter, but Jayson Granger hit a three-pointer that sparked a 10-0 run Baskonia used to go in front for good. The lead was still only 38-30 at halftime, but Tornike Shengelia scored half of Baskonia’s points in a 16-2 charge during a span of only three and a half minutes that opened a 58-36 advantage with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Career stat

Baskonia sharpshooter Matt Janning, a veteran of 101 EuroLeague games, had his first game with multiple blocked shots; he blocked 2 in this game. He now has 12 blocks in his career.

Hidden stat

MARTINEZ, PEDRO

"One of the most important things in basketball is to be aggressive on defense and try to run on the fast break, and we did a good job in the second half. It is a good victory, but we have to think about the next game as fast as possible. I am normally happy with the effort this team has. For sure that we can improve individually, and as a team, but normally all my players make a good effort in each game."
CAKI, AHMET
Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul
"Congratulations to Baskonia. We actually started the first quarter well, we were in the game offensively and defensively. We knew that Baskonia is good in the open court and in offensive rebounding, and in the first quarter we did a good job on that. But in the second quarter, with our bad offensive organization, we allowed them to make a 14-2 run to finish the second quarter. In the third quarter, we scored just 11 points. Our shot selection was not good, but also Baskonia played good defense. They got the difference with our turnovers and allowing them offensive rebounds. In the last quarter, we tried to get back in the game as much as possible, but they are an experienced team and they did not let us do it, and they won the game with a big difference."

"We knew that one of our problems is how we were coming out in the third quarter. It was all about the mindset, and we changed our mindset. I think it is one of the best defensive games we played so far. I think the defense is the key. After a good defense we can run and share the ball. This win is very important. As we know that every game counts, and at the end of the day, and especially at home, it is important to lock down this win."
POIRIER, VINCENT
KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz
" I think we had a great game during all 40 minutes. It was intense, we played great defense which allows us to run and get easy baskets. That's what we need to do. We have to get any win we can get at home to have a better chance [this season]."
