Versatile Gibson gives Budocnost opening-night win over Reggio Emilia

Buducnost VOLI Podgorica held its nerve to seal a back and forth 82-74 home victory over Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia in an entertaining and evenly contested match-up in Montenegro. The home team controlled the first quarter before Reggio Emilia dominated the second and third, but a 21-5 tear in the final period did the job for Buducnost. Kyle Gibson led the host with 16 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds, while Nemanja Gordic came close to a double-double with 12 points and 9 assists and Nikola Ivanovic added 15 points. Reggio Emilia’s key man was Amedeo Della Valle, who exploded in the third quarter by scoring 9 points in just over 5 minutes, and finished with a game-high 18 points.

Buducnost made a fast start as Kyle Landry’s triple opened the way to a 10-0 lead, forcing the visitors into an early timeout. Reggio Emilia bounced back as Manuchar Markoishvili got the scoreboard moving with a triple, but Danilo Nikolic’s second three-pointer soon re-established Buducnost’s ten-point lead. The second quarter was a different story as Julian Wright, Federico Mussini and Garrett Nevels connected from downtown – the latter with a foul which he converted to tie the game at 29-29. Then a dunk from Jalen Reynolds gave Reggio Emilia its first lead, and baskets were traded evenly for the remainder of the second period, which ended with the visitors leading, 39-41. Della Valle started the second half with 9 quick points, including a triple to make it 47-53. But Buducnost came back again in the final quarter and Gordic’s steal and basket tied the game. Milic Starovlah hit a triple to give the hosts their first lead of the second half, 66-65. Ivanovic converted his third three-pointer to make it 73-65 as Reggio Emilia was held scoreless for nearly 4 minutes, and Gibson converted another three to make it a 10-point lead and seal the deal.

Next week Buducnost heads on the road to face Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem, while Reggio Emilia has its home opener against Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul.

Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"Every win is important. This one is a great experience for my side. Reggio has a very good team, we’re in a tough group. We will go step by step, every good game in Europe is important for us. With this amount of energy, I have to be pleased."
MENETTI, MASSIMILIANO
Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia
"Congratulations to Buducnost VOLI. They played a tough game, with a lot of energy. Especially in last six minutes, we couldn’t do the right things on the court. We had an idea that it would be a tough game. After couple of stupid turnovers, the opponents took the lead in the middle of last quarter. That was the most important part of the match."

Players

NIKOLIC, DANILO
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"We played excellent game. We had a good rhythm from the start, with good defense, very aggressive. We have to continue in this way, to play complete matches."
DELLA VALLE, AMEDEO
Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia
"I think we played 30 minutes of very solid game. We stopped doing our things in the final minutes, when we lost focus. We missed couple of easy shots and it had a high cost for us. We wanted to win, but we will be back in the next game at home. Buducnost VOLI has a couple of players from Montenegro national team, we don’t have that experience."
