Khimik Yuzhne improved to 2-0 in group F by edging Nizhny Novgorod 78-76. The hosts led throughout the second half, but Nizhny rallied late and had a shot to force overtime, but Brandon Paul missed at the buzzer. Nizhny dropped to 1-1 with the loss. Jamal Shuler paced the victors with 18 points and Paul Delaney added 16. Artem Pustovi added 3 of the team’s 7 blocked shots. Petr Gubanov led Nizhny with 21 points, Brandon Paul added 14 and Dimitriy Khvostov ran the offense with 9 assists.

Paul had a hand in all his team’s points as Nizhny jumped to a 2-7 start. Khimik stayed close and cut the lead to 1 several times, including twice from the hands of Sergiy Popov before Shuler’s triple tied the game at 16-16. A three from Paul and another at the end of the quarter by Vadim Panin gave the visitors a 20-25 lead through 10 minutes. Gubanov extended the lead to 23-31 early in the second quarter. Shuler and Popov each scored twice in a 9-0 run that carried Khimik to a 38-37 lead, though Gubanov free throws left Nizhny ahead 38-39 at the break. Delaney took charge from the start of the second half, scoring 9 in a 13-3 opening run. Gubanov and Paul did their best to keep Nizhny within striking distance and Semen Antonov’s three-point play made it a 4-point game before Matt Gatens beat the buzzer for a triple and a 61-54 Khimik lead through three quarters. Baskets by Ronaldas Freimanis and Shuler put Khimik up by 11. Gubanov nailed a three and Khvostov added a basket-plus-foul as Nizhny narrowed the gap to 7. A Vladimir Ilyev three-point play closed the gap to 3 with less than four minutes to go. Paul, with a steal and slam, made it 69-68. Shuler put Khimik back in control, 73-68, with two minutes to go. Delaney extended the gap to 7, but Nizhny made one last run to get within 1 on a Gubanov three with 7 seconds left. Shuler split free throws with 6 seconds to go, but Paul missed a shot to force overtime at the buzzer.

"Today, perhaps, was not very nice basketball, but there was high dedication. We won as a team. As I said before the game, it was very important to feel the support of our fans. Thanks to our fans, we felt their help."
LUKIC, ZORAN
Nizhny Novgorod
"I want to congratulate the opponent on his victory in a hard game. I agree with Jamal Shuler about the key moment in the end of third quarter. We made unforced errors and deservedly lost the game."

Players

SHULER, JAMAL
Khimik Yuzhne
"It was tough game. Both teams want to be in the top of the group. We played as a team, and that helped us to win. A turning point of the game was three-point shot of Gatens in the final seconds of the third quarter, which gave us the motivation and confidence to win in the final part of the game."
GUBANOV, PETR
Nizhny Novgorod
"In the first half our team played very well in defense, but we could not stop Shuler. We played poorly in the third quarter. It's a shame to lose such a game."
