Madrid mauls Maccabi in Tel Aviv

Real Madrid thoroughly dominated Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv 66-87 on Thursday night at Menorah Mivtachim Arena in Tel Aviv to remain undefeated through six games this season. The reigning champs used a 0-16 second-quarter run and a 0-13 charge in the third to take total control of the game. Jaycee Carroll scored 14 of his 16 in the decisive second-quarter blitz and Sergio Llull matched him with 14 of his team-high 17 in the third. Gustavo Ayon posted 12 points and 12 boards and Anthony Randolph had 11 and 8 as the champs outrebounded Maccabi 27-46. Johnny O'Bryant led Maccabi with 17 points and 7 rebounds and Ramon Sessions netted 11 points in his EuroLeague debut. The loss dropped Maccabi to 1-5.

The game got off to a fast finish with both teams scoring at rapid pace led by O'Bryant for the home team and Edy Tavares for the visitors. Sessions came in to make his EuroLeague debut midway through the first quarter and soon had his first basket, which put Maccabi up 13-12. Randolph's second three of the quarter gave Madrid a 15-18 edge after 10 minutes. Ayon stepped up for Los Blancos with a dunk at one end and a block at the other. Rudy Fernandez drilled a three and Felipe Reyes scored inside as the margin swelled to 19-25. Carroll took over the game with 4 three-pointers plus a backdoor layup to lead a 0-16 Madrid charge that put the visitors in total control at 21-41. DeAndre Kane's tip-in made it 23-41 at the break. The start of the second half resembled the free-flowing first quarter with point guards Scottie Wilbekin and Llull fueling the respective offenses. But when the hosts missed a few shots, Madrid did not; Llull's third three of the third quarter made it 35-59 and the visitors kept rolling. Reyes's putback made it a 27-point game (39-66) late in the third before Michael Roll and Jake Cohen trimmed the gap to 44-66 through three quarters. Little changed in the fourth as Madrid remained in control and rounded off a dominant performance.

Decisive stretch

The game was close through the first quarter and Johnny O'Bryant had the hosts within 19-20 early in the second, but that's when Jaycee Carroll came in and the game would never be the same. Carroll scored 14 in a run of 16 unanswered points that helped Madrid take control for good. He drilled 4 three-pointers and added a backdoor layup courtesy of a Gustavo Ayon assist as Madrid raced to a 21-41 lead and never looked back.

One of Maccabi's worst defeats

The final score was on the verge of being Maccabi's worst ever home loss in terms of margin of defeat until Angelo Caloiaro's buzzer-beating three-pointer saved face. Maccabi's worst home loss was by 23 (61-84) to CSKA in November 2014. Incidentally, Maccabi's worst offensive home game in the EuroLeague was 57 points in a playoff loss to Madrid in April 2013.

Stellar stats

By the numbers, there is little that Maccabi can be happy with aside from the fact that it only committed 7 turnovers and scored 15 points off Madrid's 13 turnovers. Madrid dominated the boards (27-46) and shot 48.4% from downtown (15 of 31), while Maccabi made only 6 of 29 threes (20.7%). Jaycee Carroll and Sergio Llull alone outdid all of Maccabi by combining to make 9 of 13 three-pointers.

Next game

Real Madrid will try to keep its streak going when it hosts Khimki Moscow Region next Thursday. Maccabi faces the long trip to Herbalife Gran Canaria for a Friday night fixture.

"I would like to congratulate Real Madrid for an amazing job tonight. They were the better team and deserved to win the game. About us, it is already the second time in a row in a EuroLeague game that we are not able to score. We are missing a lot of shots, even today we had one more extra player in the roster and we didn't get out of that situation. The only problematic part of the game was in the second quarter- in Barcelona it was the third quarter, which means we have a lot of problems with consistency. As a coach I know the problem, we are playing a lot of games without main pieces and it it costing us. Last couple of games we played without our point guards and we used Michael Roll and DeAndre Kane and let them play a position the don't play and now that you saw they did not have the right energy and right way to play basketball. As a coach I have been in this situation many times at the beginning of the season, even with this terrible start we have a long way to go. When we are complete I am sure we will play much better basketball, we are going to make open shots and simply, we are going to be better."

"It looks easy because of the difference on the scoreboard, but we had to do a lot of work. I think our first half was dominant, rebounding, defending. And then we moved the ball very well. At the beginning we were missing easy jumpers, open jumpers. When we started to make them and we created the difference, in the second half we controlled very well the situation."

"After when happened on Sunday [in a home loss in the Spanish League], it was time to take a step forward and we played unbelievably well, helping each other out on defense, talking to each other, supporting each other. This is what makes Real Madrid great; in tough times, it always takes that step forward. We have a lot of talent on this team, players, coaches and staff, everyone involved with the basketball team. That help us a lot; if someone doesn't play well, somebody else steps up. That is what matters and what gives value to a team. We don't depend on one player and learn this throughout the years; we need each other to play well and win. Winning on the road is really important. Tthe team that gets the most road wins will be in the first spots. Playing at home is always more comfortable - it is not easier, though, but playing on the road is tough, fans are against you and your opponent is motivated, so this win has great value."
