Spirou Charleroi asserted its control of Group F on Tuesday by beating Brose Baskets Bamberg 64-62 to remain undefeated. The hosts struggled early, but turned things around as Jonathan Tabu scored 8 points in a 15-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters to put Charleroi ahead for good. The lead would hit 10 before Demond Greene cut the gap in the closing minute, but it would not be enough for Bamberg, which dropped to 0-3. Matt Walsh paced the winners with 18 points and Jerry Johnson and Tabu added 9 each. Greene paced Bamberg with 20 points, Predrag Suput netted 18 and Eric Taylor 12. Suput scored 9 as the visitors started the game on a 2-13 tear. The lead reached 15-30 before Walsh woke up and scored half of Charleroi’s points in a 16-0 run that gave it the lead. Bamberg awoke in time to take the lead back by halftime, but Charleroi had one more charge coming and that proved to be the difference.

Bamberg and Suput dominated the start of the game as the visitors scored baskets on their first four trips downcourt – three by Suput – to take a 0-8 lead. After more than three-and-a-half minutes, Johnson scored Charleroi’s first basket, but Suput followed with a triple and Rober Garrett added free throws to make it 2-13. The lead would reach 13 on Filiberto Rivera free throws before Walsh’s second triple and Andre Riddick free throws made it 11-20 after 10 minutes. Suput scored to open the second period and then set Greene up for a three as Bamberg asserted its control. Despite points from Pankracije Barac and Wes Wilkinson, the duo of Suput and Greene soon had the visitors up 15-30. However Walsh had other things in mind and he hit a pair of triples and scored half the points in a 16-0 charge as Spirou stormed to the lead. Suput committed 3 turnovers during Bamberg’s four-minute scoreless spell. But Suput would end the drought with a triple and Taylor added 2 free throws to give Bamberg a 31-35 lead at the break.

The visitors regained their confidence after the break and held Spirou without a basket for five minutes while Taylor scored twice to restore a 9-point Bamberg advantage. Dwayne Browles free throws and a Justin Hamilton layup brought the hosts back to life. And after a Len Matela triple and a Walsh steal and slam, Charleroi had cut the gap to 41-43. Barac soon tied the game with a basket in the paint and Tabu capped an 11-0 run with free throws and then a bucket to make it 47-43 at the end of the third period. Tabu scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter as well as Charleroi started to pull away. The intensity grew as Greene drilled a triple to bring Bamberg back within 51-46 midway through the last period. And Taylor soon cut the gap to 3 from the line. Johnson answered with free throws and then the game momentum leaped towards the hosts when Wilkinson stole the ball from Michael Jordan who was called for an unsportsmanlike foul when he tried to stop him. Hamilton used the resulting possession to pile on a triple that made it 57-48 with three minutes to play. Bamberg desperately tried to climb back and a some hot shooting from Greene closed the gap to 2, but it was too little, too late for the visitors.

"Our mentality was not good at the beginning of the game, without any respect for the tactical rules. However we prepared this game very well yesterday, but we entered on the court without any concentration. Some guys must understand what European competition is. But we were 15 points down and I'm satisfied by our reaction. This success is very important for the future, even if we are not yet qualified. But we've made a step in the right direction tonight."
FLEMING, CHRIS
Brose Baskets
"We're troubled by some problems, like Johnson who didn't practice because of a leg injury. But we've made a good game, except two or three minutes in the second quarter when we lost too many balls. Charleroi has a good coach and good players but we had a real chance to win in a tough game. I don't know if it was our last chance for qualification. We'll try to win the three last games and we will see."

"It was a little bit confusing tonight. We did not play enough inside and Bamberg played with a lot of confidence at the beginning. It's important for me to score, I took some open shots with success, but for my team, I've tried to care to my passing game too. Step by step, we build our qualification."
